Charlamagne Asks James Talarico Which Political Party ‘Would Be Most Uncomfortable With Him’

Charlamagne Tha God asked Texas state Rep. James Talarico (D) which party “would be most uncomfortable with” Jesus on Wednesday’s edition of The Breakfast Club.

Talarico appeared alongside Charlamagne and co-host Angela Rye to discuss his U.S. Senate campaign. Fox News polling from last week shows Talarico leading Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton 51 to 48%, with 24% of non-MAGA Republicans saying they support the Democratic candidate.

Throughout his campaign, Talarico has made headlines for his interpretation of his Christian faith, making clear he opposes Christian nationalism, which major figures in President Donald Trump’s administration — like Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth — subscribe to.

On Wednesday, Charlamagne asked the state representative, “If Jesus came back today, which political party do you think would be most uncomfortable with him?”

“I think both political parties would be deeply uncomfortable,” Talarico responded. “I think Jesus is far more, um, radical than any political party. And when I say radical, I don’t mean extreme. The word radical comes from the Latin word for ‘root.’ So, Jesus goes to the root of our problems, and he calls us to a deeper love, a deeper justice, a deeper peace, and so I think he would challenge both political parties to keep working toward a more radical vision for democracy — more rights, more opportunities for more of our neighbors.”

Trump has been another outspoken critic of the way Talarico chooses to express his religion, telling reporters in May that he thinks Democrats have a “weird, a weird candidate,” in Texas, adding, “Six genders — a real hit on Jesus.”

Here, the president is referencing comments circa-2021 from the Senate candidate, in which he claimed that “there are six” biological sexes.

Also in 2021, Talarico shared his belief that “God is non-binary,” though he’s since called those remarks “cringey comments,” admitting he has “some” regret about making them.
