While this White House had persistently been gripped by stories of infighting, gossip and turmoil, this past week has been absolutely insane, even for this typically chaotic administration. With news that White House communications director Hope Hicks is resigning and reports that the president is leaning on Chief of Staff John Kelly to oust his daughter and son-in-law from the West Wing, Fox News’ Chris Wallace likened the palace intrigue to everyone’s favorite premium cable medieval fantasy epic.
Regarding the departure of Hicks, Wallace told host Sandra Smith this morning that he figures that she “just wore out,” especially after she was the focus of the media spotlight for weeks following the Rob Porter domestic abuse scandal and her testimony before the House Intelligence Committee.
“She did not like it much in this town,” he noted. “I can see why.”
Smith brought up Kushner and how the White House has maintained that he’s a valued member of the White House despite Kushner being the target of a number of damaging bombshell reports. Wallace reacted by highlighting some of these news stories, such as Kushner reportedly receiving multi-million dollar loans from companies he met with at the White House, by stating these appear to be “planned leaks” done “in an effort to diminish” Kushner’s role in the administration.
This led Wallace to point out the reports that Trump wants Kelly to push out Javanka, leading him to toss out this zinger: “Game of Thrones has nothing on this White House and this administration right now.”
