CNN’s Brooke Baldwin Tears Up While Reading Rob Porter Accuser’s Account of Abuse
The story that has dominated Washington over the past couple of days has been the allegations of abuse made by the two ex-wives of White House staff secretary Rob Porter. The senior aide has since announced his resignation, but not before the White House crafted a response defending Porter over the reports of his spousal abuse.
One of Porter’s ex-wives, Jennie Willoughby, actually wrote a blog post last year that recounted the history of physical and emotional violence during the couple’s marriage. The post has now gained widespread attention in the wake of the reports surrounding Willoughby’s ex-husband and this afternoon, CNN’s Brooke Baldwin read the blog entry in full on the air.
And it had quite an impact on the CNN anchor.
Reciting Willoughby’s graphic and explicit account of the abuse she allegedly suffered at the hands of Porter, Baldwin began tearing up as she reached the end of the post. The final words seemed to really hit Baldwin emotionally.
“Afterward, I let go and welcomed the hard work of healing and forgiveness. My experience made me stronger and able to love more deeply. But my heart breaks for him. In the end, who is the real victim of his choices?”
Baldwin choked up a bit as she attempted to move on to a panel discussion. Noting that she has personally never been a victim of domestic abuse, she addressed her colleague Christi Paul, who recently wrote a book called Survivor.
“It’s difficult to read words like that and still know that someone still stayed and I know you can relate,” Baldwin said to Paul, moving on to the roundtable conversation.
Following her tearful reading of the blog post, Baldwin had the following to say on Twitter in response to a viewer who said she teared up watching the CNN host:
