A “creative” Jonathan Karl grilled White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest on Monday about the possibility of Vice President Joe Biden throwing his hat into the presidential ring.
Karl, the ABC News White House correspondent, asked Earnest if Biden “looks like a guy who’s about to announce he’s running for president,” a question that evoked laughter out of not only the other reporters in the room, but even from Earnest himself, who called it a “creative” way of asking about Biden’s intentions.
“I’m not going to stand here and assess the vice president’s body language,” Earnest said. “There is no denying that Vice President Biden is somebody who brings a lot of energy to his current job. And based on the fact that he has run for president twice before, I think should be a clear indication that he believes that he’s got something to offer to that debate and to offer to the country.”
Earnest went on to say that Biden’s “strong performance” as Obama’s #2 has shown many Democrats that Biden would be an “influential” and “effective” candidate. He also echoed Hillary Clinton, the Democratic frontrunner, who has said that the decision is a personal one that only Biden should make.
In the past, Earnest has not said whether President Barack Obama would endorse or support Biden if he runs, but insisted that Obama believes choosing Biden to be his VP in 2008 was the best political decision he has ever made.
