During a press conference earlier tonight, the FBI released plane camera footage they recorded during their confrontation this week with Oregon “militia” leader Ammon Bundy. One of Bundy’s companions died during the arrest when he was shot by federal agents.
As The Oregonian reported, Robert ‘LaVoy’ Finicum has been one of the militiamen’s most frequent spokesmen, and he was shot and killed when fedeal agents said that he charged officers during the stop. While the militiamen have claimed that he was murdered in cold blood as he surrendered, the FBI released a statement defending their claim that he was shot as he advanced toward them and agents saw him reach for his gun.
“I want to caution you that the video does show the shooting death of LaVoy Finicum,” said special agent Greg Bretzing. “We realize that viewing that piece of the video will be upsetting to some people, but we feel that it is necessary to show the whole thing unedited in the interest of transparency.”
While the video is shot from high up and is occasionally blocked by trees, the first part of the video has the FBI following a jeep and a white truck. The jeep, which carried Bundy, was pulled over by a police vehicle, and he was taken into custody alongside others in his party.
In the second half, starting at 6:00, Finicum, who was driving the truck, swerved to avoid a blockade and spike strip and drove into a snow bank. The footage shows him Finicum’s confrontation with the officers, which culminates with him being shot, the FBI launching flash bangs and other projectiles, and more arrests were made.
