Fox Anchor to Dem Socialist: Trump Voters ‘Like What You Have to Say’
Fox News’ Dana Perino cleared the air a bit during a mostly tense interview with Democratic socialist candidate Francesca Hong on Friday to say that she’s heard that voters who support President Donald Trump “like what you have to say.”
Hong, currently the frontrunner in Wisconsin’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, has received backlash for resurfaced 2o21 social media posts in which she called to “defund” the police, claiming they “exist to uphold white supremacy.” Last week, however, during a local radio interview, she clarified that she does “not believe that police funding should go away.”
Perino first played Hong a June video of her alongside streamer and progressive activist Hasan Piker, asking if there was anything she said then that she now disagrees with. In the clip, she expressed support for universal childcare, guaranteed paid leave, “abolishing ICE,” public grocery stores, “a free Palestine,” and more.
“No,” Hong responded.
When asked if she disagrees with anything in the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) platform, she said yes, adding that “abolishing the Senate” is “nonsensical.”
She went on to deny that she’d support “abolishing” the Supreme Court or that she’d “defund” the Department of Defense.
“How does defunding the police put working-class people first?” Perino questioned. “Why should [voters] not believe that you would want to do that?”
“I believe that people can evolve,” Hong responded. “We need Trump voters from previous elections, who now would like to vote for me, who have a sign in their yard.”
“So, who needs to evolve? The voter or you?” asked Perino.
“The governor cannot defund the police, and I won’t defund the police,” Hong vowed.
When asked about her fundraising efforts when compared to Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-WI), the Republican candidate, Hong cited her “multi-racial, multi-generational, multi-faith” effort before Perino interrupted, “I read a big, long feature piece where they talked to — I just want to compliment you — the reporters talked to Trump voters who say, ‘She’s very affable.’ They kind of like what you have to say.”
