Germany’s Angela Merkel Indicates Europe Can No Longer Rely on the United States

While President Donald Trump tweeted out this morning that his recent trip to Europe was a “great success” that brought “big results,” it appears that European leaders didn’t feel as warm and fuzzy about his visit.

Speaking to a crowd at an election rally in Germany today, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that it looked like the days where the United States and post-Brexit Britain could be depended on as reliable partners to Europe appeared to be done.

From Agence France Presse’s coverage of Merkel’s comments:

“The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out. I’ve experienced that in the last few days,” Merkel told a crowd at an election rally in Munich, southern Germany.

“We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands,” she added.

She added that while Europe would keep trying to maintain a solid relationship with the two countries, Europeans will “have to fight for our own destiny.”

During Trump’s visit to Europe last week, he delivered scathing remarks to NATO allies, criticizing the amount of military spending by other NATO members while neglecting to endorse the organization’s Article Five — the guarantee that other member countries will aid others when attacked.

On top of that, Trump left the G7 summit without stating whether or not the United States would continue to take part in the Paris climate accords. He’s noted that he’ll make a decision at a later time.
