GOP Sen. Ron Johnson Backs Off FBI ‘Secret Society’ Conspiracy Theories: ‘Real Possibility’ the Text Was a Joke

After stoking the fires of rumored deep state anti-Trump “secret society,” Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) is walking back his comments about the Department of Justice and the FBI.

Johnson was one of the most prominent Congressional Republicans this week who alleged that Peter Strzok and Lisa Page were members of a top-level DOJ conspiracy to bring down President Donald Trump. Johnson based his accusations on a text message recovered from a trove of correspondence between Strzok and Page that was missing until this afternoon.

Johnson’s idea was echoed by several of his colleagues, and they gave interviews to various news outlets where they grumbled about alleged, major corruption within the government. However, ABC News obtained the “secret society” text, and all indications suggest that Page used those words as a sarcastic joke.

Johnson walked back his comments somewhat when he spoke to reporters on Wednesday, and today, he conceded to CNN’s Manu Raju that there was a “real possibility” the text was made in jest.
