Hillary Clinton Also Made ‘Misinterpreted’ Remark About Assassination of Rival Candidate

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump once again stepped all over the news cycle with an offhand remark that suggested the possible assassination of his presidential rival, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Trump has since tried to “clarify” the remark, but regardless of his intent, the suggestion embedded in the remark was unmistakable. Just ask Hillary Clinton, who underwent a similar brouhaha when she ran for president in 2008.

At a rally in North Carolina, Trump told the crowd that if Hillary “gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people––maybe there is,” a quote that Trump later sought to recast as a call for political mobilization. In 2008, Hillary drew fire with this observation about her decision to remain in the Democratic primary race despite a nearly-insurmountable delegate lead for then-Sen. Barack Obama:

My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don’t understand it.

Like Trump, then-Senator Clinton took a shot at a walkback, delivering an apology that made it seem as though she had insulted Bobby Kennedy, not Barack Obama:

There were a couple of problems with Hillary’s argument about intent, though, because she and her campaign surrogates had already taken heat for very similar remarks twice before that, a fact that makes it tough to argue she didn’t know anyone would take it that way. On the other hand, it also showed that going around talking about Bobby Kennedy was something she just liked to do.

Someone on Fox News was speculating earlier today that they would be freaking out if Hillary had made a remark similar to Trump’s. As it happens, the media in 2008 wasn’t any more receptive to Hillary’s explanation than they are now to Trump’s. The white-hot center of the liberal media world at that time, Keith Olbermann, delivered an epic ten-minute rant on the subject that featured this spittle-flecked dismount:

So before anyone starts to whine that Trump is getting a raw deal over his remark, let’s just go to the videotape.
