MapQuest Navigates Lake Ontario News With Its Own Name Generator: Call It ‘Whatever You Want’

MapQuest deftly found its way to internet gold with the news that President Donald Trump had renamed Lake Ontario amid a nasty trade war with Canada, offering followers on X a “name generator” so they could share in the fun.

Hours after Trump signed an executive order to officially rename the body of water Lake America, MapQuest — the tried-and-true 1990s pre-Google Maps favorite for everyday navigation — piped up on X.

“We’re not changing it,” the company wrote, scoring 3.1 million views on X.

They followed up with a link to a name generator — urging folks to “name it whatever you want at your leisure” and “tag us in your work.”

The post garnered 1,600 responses, more than 800,000 views, and plenty of jabs at Trump, who quipped “now all we need is an ocean” during Thursday’s executive signing on the name change.

The naming spat came about after trade talks between the two nations failed late last week. The breakdown prompted the United States to follow through with threats of 50% tariffs on Canadian imports while  Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney promised to match those tariffs “dollar for dollar.”

What followed was a war of words that involved Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who publicly asked if Trump “wants to hurt Americans” with the trade war, and Trump slamming Ford as a “flunky.”

Trump’s attempt to rename one of the Great Lakes comes after he infamously declared the Gulf of Mexico would be renamed the “Gulf of America,” prompting some companies, including Google, to follow along while others, such as the Associated Press, would not.

Users on X had a ball making their own names for Lake Ontario, with many using the opportunity to jab Trump and rename it “Lake Obama.”
