Oof. Has everyone in Washington completely lost their minds? Or is this really just midterm fever gone wild. Yesterday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi told San Francisco’s KCBS radio that she is joining those “who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded.” No really, that is what she actually said.
“There is no question there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some. And I join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded…How is this being ginned up that here we are talking about Treasure Island, something we’ve been working on for decades, something of great interest to our community as we go forward to an election about the future of our country and two of the first three questions are about a zoning issue in New York City.”
Looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded. Really? Does it then follow that the Speaker of the House will be looking into how every ginned up midterm story that distracts from real news is funded from here on out? Because to the best of my knowledge the opposition to the Lower Manhattan mosque is a local issue that a number of conservative groups and politicians running for office in November have latched on to and labeled with a catchy and sensitive name and turned into a national sensation. Is Pelosi going to look into the funding that goes into Sarah Palin‘s Facebook page and Twitter account?
Furthermore, the idea of the Lower Manhattan mosque happens to be something, that for a variety of reasons, many many people in the country also say they are opposed to. Is Pelosi planning on looking into how all the people who participated in those polls are funded? Considering the current unemployment rate, I imagine at least a few of them are being ‘funded’ by the government by way of unemployment insurance. It should probably be noted that Pelosi ‘clarified’ her statement today:
“I support the statement made by the Interfaith Alliance that ‘We agree with the ADL that there is a need for transparency about who is funding the effort to build this Islamic center. At the same time, we should also ask who is funding the attacks against the construction of the center.’
“For all of those expressing concern about the 9/11 families, we call upon them to join us in support of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act when Congress returns in September.”
So, basically she clarified to say meant what she said. And although she doesn’t go so far as to say she intends to launch any sort of official investigation, I have to say I find it worrisome that the Speaker of House thinks it’s acceptable to look into who is funding what boils down to political protests, hyped up or inconvenient as they may be. The First Amendment is not just something you get to apply, or disregard as the case may be, when it’s politically convenient. A lesson both sides can apparently share in learning at the moment. Listen to her audio below. And a Fox News clip with the always clipable Rep. Peter King below that.
