Steve Bannon: Trump Supporting Gun Control ‘Will Be the End of Everything’
Steve Bannon is suggesting that Donald Trump would betray his base in a catastrophic way if the president decides to explore gun control in the aftermath of the Las Vegas shooting.
Axios contacted 20 of Trump’s affiliates to get their thoughts on how the president is reacting to the calls for gun control after the mass casualty event in Nevada. Even though Trump enjoys major support from the gun lobby, he has spoken favorably about gun control in the past, and some people have wondered whether he’ll slip back to those tendencies as he cuts political deals with Democratic leaders.
When asked if Trump’s base would react worse to gun control than immigration amnesty, Bannon answered “as hard as it is to believe actually worse.” Bannon also said it was “Impossible: will be the end of everything,” in terms of the notion that Trump could pivot left on gun control.
Trump ally Roger Stone expressed similar views, stating “base would go insane and he knows it.”
The consensus among Trump’s closest allies is that the president wouldn’t abandon the NRA after they fought for him a lot harder in the 2016 election than most other conservative groups. Trump is believed to be friendly with the NRA’s top lobbyist, Chris Cox, and the president’s sons are known for their pro-Second Amendment views as well.
