Top Veterans Affairs Official Resigns Amid Scandal

The Department of Veterans Affairs announced on Friday that Dr. Robert Petzel, the undersecretary for health with the VA, is resigning amid the scandal surrounding VA hospitals creating lists which hid the true wait time vets endured to receive care. Some of the veterans on those lists died while waiting for delayed medical attention. Petzel’s resignation was, however, originally announced in 2013.

The announcement that Petzel will resign his post came just one day after he testified before a Senate hearing about the controversy surrounding wait times at the VA. He testified alongside Secretary of Veterans’ Affairs Eric Shinseki who some have said should also step down from his post.

“As we know from the veteran community, most veterans are satisfied with the quality of their VA health care, but we must do more to improve timely access to that care,” Shinseki said in a statement announcing Petzel’s resignation.
