Senior White House aides have told reporters that President Trump will announce the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) in his upcoming address this week.
While the announcement of Trump’s final decision is scheduled for Tuesday, Politico reports that two sources have provided details about a meeting at the White House this afternoon. The meeting was focused on how to end Barack Obama‘s protective program for undocumented DREAMer children, and also how to respond to the inevitable political blowback.
A White House official said the administration will delay enforcement of the new edict for six months so Congress has time to respond and adapt to the development.
DACA has been a source of media and political intrigue ever since reports emerged about Trump’s plans to repeal the executive measure. Trump’s critics have slammed the president over his expected plans, and several GOP figures have also called on Trump to back away from eliminating DACA.
