White House Chief of Staff John Kelly opted to double down on his “lazy” slam of undocumented immigrants who opted to not apply for DACA protection, as he said many just didn’t get “off the couch” to sign up.
In Kelly’s initial controversial comment, he said, “Some would say were too afraid to sign up, others would say were too lazy to get off their asses, but they didn’t sign up.”
He then followed-up and defended the statement, despite the negative media attention the remarks stirred-up.
“Some of them just should have probably gotten off the couch and signed up,” Kelly said today.
While the administration has been criticized as anti-immigrant for Kelly’s comments and similar statements, President Donald Trump stood up for the White House’s position by bringing up crime.
“If we don’t change this legislation if we don’t get rid of these loopholes… If we don’t change it, let’s have a shutdown. I’d love to see a shutdown if we don’t get this stuff taken care of,” Trump said while discussing the possibility of another immigration-related government shutdown.
Additionally, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders diverted from Kelly’s “lazy” statement by claiming that Democrats are actually the “lazy” ones.”
