WATCH: Chelsea Manning Releases First Campaign Ad For Maryland Senate Run

Chelsea Manning has released her first official campaign ad for her run for the Maryland Senate.

Manning, a former Army private who was convicted of giving sensitive government documents to Wikileaks, had her sentence commuted by President Barack Obama in his last year in office.

The transgender woman — born Bradley Manning — filed to challenge Maryland Senator Ben Cardin in the November Democratic primary, and released a dramatic campaign ad kicking off her run.

“We live in trying times. Times of fear, of suppression, hate,” Manning says as footage of the Charlottesville white supremacist rally play, along with other various protests. “We don’t need more or better leaders, we need someone willing to fight.”

“We need to stop expecting that our systems will somehow fix themselves, we need to actually take the reins of power from them,” she continues. “We need to challenge this at every level. We need to fix this. We don’t need them anymore, we can do better.”

“You’re damn right we got this,” she concludes.
