‘We’re Getting Out!’ Donald Trump Announces Departure From Paris Climate Agreement
During an announcement in the Rose Garden this afternoon, President Donald Trump stated that the United States would pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement.
“In order to fulfill my solemn duty to protect America and its citizens, the United States will withdraw from the Paris climate accord,” Trump said as the audience applauded.
“We’re getting out, he added. He also promised to renegotiate to reenter the accord at a later time.
“The Paris accord is a bad deal for Americans and the President’s action today is keeping his campaign promise to put America first,” Trump noted. “The accord was negotiated poorly by the Obama administration out of desperation.”
Just before he made the announcement, the Associated Press stated that it was a done deal.

The president’s intention of leaving the international climate accord had been reported by Axios earlier this week, with the outlet stating that Trump had already told several people — including EPA Director Scott Pruitt — that America would be exiting.
Meanwhile, the New York Times had already reported that the president was possibly wavering between keeping the US in the agreement or leaving. Per the NYT, White House advisers, world leaders, lawmakers on Capitol Hill and corporate executives have all tried to sway Trump one way or the other.
Following these reports, Trump took to Twitter to point out that he’d be making today’s announcement regarding his decision:
I will be announcing my decision on Paris Accord, Thursday at 3:00 P.M. The White House Rose Garden. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

Last week, Trump had tweeted out that he’d make the climate decision sometime this week:
I will make my final decision on the Paris Accord next week!

With the rumors swirling that Trump was going to exit the accords, business leaders tried to change the president’s mind through various actions. Elon Musk said he would step down from the White House advisory council he sits on if America left. Also, a number of corporations begged Trump to stay in the agreement via a full-page NYT ad.
