You Have a ‘Prettier Wrapper on the Same Poison’: Van Jones Tells Liberals to Take Trump ‘More Seriously’
Following his comments last night where he touted President Donald Trump’s tribute to slain Navy SEAL William ‘Ryan’ Owens as “one of the most extraordinary moments” in political history, CNN political commentator Van Jones discussed the criticism of his remarks from the left.
Engaging in a debate with CNN political commentator Angela Rye this afternoon, Jones attempted to distinguish the difference between commending Trump’s delivery and tone in a speech, and what he is proposing policy-wise.
“I think Democrats have expected he was going to stay that bad,” Jones said. “So much of what the liberals have made an issue of isn’t just his agenda but his temperament and his tone and his team.”
He continued, “Everybody got mad at me for saying this, but I’m going to say you. Watch the bounce he gets out of that speech and watch how he starts to use a different playbook. Liberals are going to have to reset.”
Following Rye pointing out that Trump has “demonstrated his ability to read off a teleprompter before” while highlighting the policy issues she has with the administration, Jones countered that liberals now can only focus on the policy side.
“Let me say a couple of things here,” he told Rye. “It’s liberals that have made an issue of two things — both his policies which is terrible [sic] and his tone.”
Jones added that Trump has now shown he can address his tone so you “now have a potentially prettier wrapper on the same poison.” Noting that presidential is the “bare standard,” he explained that Trump has now cleared that.
“I’m saying he did crack now that bare standard and we’re going to have to take him more seriously,” he said. “That’s all I’m saying.”
