DSA Member Will Not Engage With Hypothetical Questions Regarding Her Hypothetical Agenda

Interview Frances Gill of the DSA – KNBC TV 4

With the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) rising in stature these past few months, there has been a recurring issue: when it comes to explaining their platforms, a particular challenge emerges. Their agenda and narratives run into a roadblock frequently when faced with a deeply trenchant and bothersome question.

“How?”

This lone word often serves as political kryptonite when they sit down with an even moderately curious journalist, and what mostly results is verbal flailing, misdirection, or even stunned silence when faced with this offensive follow-up query.

• “We want universal social services.” – How will you pay for it?
• “Higher wages for workers and guaranteed benefits.” – How will you address the inflation spike?
• “Public transportation should be free.” – How will you prevent buses and trains from becoming rolling homeless shelters?

The effects of this highly offensive line of questioning were seen at the local news outlet in Los Angeles, KNBC TV 4 News, when Frances Gill, a member of the national DSA organization, sat for an interview with political reporter Conan Nolan.

Gill was laying out some of the agenda forwarded by her group, and it was the now-typical litany of pragmatism-defying proposals. It serves as yet another example of these DSA lecturers wilting when they need to show their work

One of the items brought up by Nolan was their call to defund the police and eliminate prisons. Watch as he asks her about this directly, and she attempts to answer indirectly with platitudes. (“We want to see a horizon, where people are not reliant on armed enforcement.”) Nolan addresses the fact that the group’s platform specifically calls for this, and it is only then that she has to admit to it. Next, when she is asked how to address a particular crime taking place, the conversation goes wheels-up in a ditch.

Understand what just played out there. She is adrift when asked to explain how her very proposal will shake out in the real world. If there are no police, what is the response when a violent crime is being committed? She has no answer, so the attempt is made to dismiss it as a baseless hypothetical that does not warrant analysis. Yet, this was a question rooted in…yes, wait for it…her own hypothetical proposal.

Gill tries to dismiss the question as if Nolan concocted some fever-dream scenario plucked from a Hollywood script. What he proposed was a rather quotidian criminal experience in this country, and certainly in their city, but she had no explanation for how to deal with a very real-world occurrence.

This displays so much that is wrong with the DSA campaign items. It is the mentality of coddled, trust-fund-level collegiate thinking, where everything exists in term-paper theology and activist rally speeches, but practical applications are scant.

So much effort goes into building proposals and the mapping out of agendas, but little effort goes into Stage-2. Faced with challenges such as asking how to implement these plans, they are bereft of solid explanations.

A good way to see the vacancy of so many of these plans from the DSA is to transpose their exact words to a prior era. Take the contemporary speeches heard from podiums or in studios and instead place those same words in the mouth of a 1960s-era Flower Child. You see that we have the very same breathy, meandering, and eye-rolling daftness common to that time period.

“Sooo…maybe we should not have cops anymore, because they, like, foster the violence? And billionaires are so wrong, because kids are starving in Africa, right? And making people pay for medicine is such a crypto-fascist policy because being healthy is so like our right, and stuff. And grocery stores should be WAY cheaper, since those guys are totally getting rich off of our hunger, and that’s not cool, man.”

Okay, Sunflower…we’ll get right on all of that.
