Dem Socialist Sputters After David Remnick Asks Simple Question on Plan to ‘Tax the Hell Out of Millionaires’

Maybe the plan is still getting ironed out?

You would hope so, after Democratic Socialists of America co-chair Megan Romer metaphorically stepped on a banana peel and tumbled into a thorny bush when The New Yorker editor David Remnick simply asked for more details on the group’s plan for “taxing the hell out of millionaires.”

“Well, what does ‘Taxing the hell out of them’ mean?'” Remnick asked on the Friday episode of The New Yorker Radio Hour.

The question seemed to break Romer’s brain.

“Uhhhh, yeah, you know, again, I don’t have like a solid [answer], but—” Romer chuckled and sputtered.

“But shouldn’t you?” Remnick asked.

“Um, that’s a good question,” she said.

Remnick continued, “If you’re the co-chair of the DSA, shouldn’t you be more specific than ‘taxing the hell’ out of something?”

“So again, it’s democracy, right?” Romer said. “And we have to look at what we have to spend and what we need. We don’t want to depend on the existence of millionaires because that means people are still getting exploited.”

She added, “So yeah, we need to look at what we need to pay for in the interim, what sort of tax base we need for that to happen, and build from there.”

Romer’s bumpy answer came a moment after she told Remnick she was more concerned about billionaires than millionaires, since most of them “exploited the working class” to make their dough.

Her New Yorker interview follows a handful of democratic socialists recently winning Democratic primaries.

Two of those candidates in New York — Darializa Avila Chevalier (D) and Claire Valdez (D) — are card-carrying members of the Democratic Socialists of America, just like NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D). The mayor backed both Chevalier and Valdez in their primaries. 

Beyond its socialist economic agenda, the DSA website said it is against President Donald Trump’s “racist immigration policies” and America being allied with Israel, which it said has committed a “genocide” in Gaza.

Soon after the primaries, Trump sardonically congratulated Mamdani on getting “solid Communists” elected. His tone shifted a few days later, when he said the communists have started to make “their move” in the USA.

“The game is on,” Trump said.

Trump has ripped the socialists and socialism plenty of other times since then, including when he said communism is a “cancer” which must be dealt with ASAP during his Fourth of July address.

He issued a similar warning during a July speech in Georgia. Trump said it is really simple to understand: “With communism, everything turns to sh*t!”
