Chris Wallace Scoffs At Conservatives Blaming Democrats For McCarthy’s Ouster: ‘It’s Not Their Job to Save the Republican Speaker’
Not long after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) got booted from the speakership on Tuesday, some conservatives began blaming Democrats for his ouster – even though it was triggered by a Republican using an agreement he and McCarthy made in January.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) filed a motion to vacate the chair, thus triggering a vote of the House on the matter. While only eight members of the Republican majority voted to remove McCarthy, 210 Democrats also voted to remove him, which was more than enough to give McCarthy the heave-ho.
Appearing on Wednesday’s CNN Primetime, Chris Wallace addressed the refrain that McCarthy’s speakership is over because of the minority party.
“So Chris, Republicans now are blaming Democrats for the fact that McCarthy no longer has a job,” host Abby Phillip said. “Do you think that they share some blame here?”
Wallace seemed mildly taken aback by the query.
“The Democrats?” he said. “No. It’s not their job to save the Republican speaker. I mean, can you imagine if Nancy Pelosi was in trouble back when she was speaker and they were counting on Republicans to bail her out?”
“Yeah, not in a million years,” Phillip reacted.
“Yeah, there’s plenty of legitimate bad blood between Republicans and Democrats,” Wallace continued. “Remember, it was Kevin McCarthy who, right after January 6th said that Donald Trump was responsible for what had happened on that terrible day. And then a couple of weeks later, he was down in Mar-a-Lago kissing the former president’s ring. So, there was not a lot of love lost between the Democrats and Kevin McCarthy. And not to say that they were gonna oust him, but they certainly weren’t gonna save him.”
