DNC Approves Resolution Urging Congress to Abolish ICE in Sweeping Rebuke of Trump’s Illegal Immigration Crackdown

The Democratic National Committee on Saturday approved a resolution calling on liberal lawmakers to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement — a move which further intensifies the party’s opposition to President Donald Trump and his crack down on illegal immigration.

Newsweek was the first outlet to report the resolution, which aims to not only abolish ICE but completely dismantle the immigration enforcement system currently in place.

The resolution “goes beyond calls for reform” and urges Dem congress members to “enact legislation abolishing ICE, wind down the immigration detention system, restrict Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding unless certain enforcement activities end, and terminate contracts with private detention providers,” Newsweek reported.

DNC Chair Ken Martin seemed like he was attempting to downplay the resolution in a statement shared with the outlet, with Martin noting the party’s official positions are solidified every four years at the national convention.

“However, clearly, the one thing that unites Democrats, regardless of their position on reform versus abolish or whatever other ways to change what’s happening, is people believe that what ICE is doing right now and CBP and the federal government should stop,” Martin continued. “There has to be a better way.”

Stopping illegal immigration was one of the key issues which sent Trump back to the White House in 2024.

The president lamented earlier this month his second administration has done such a good job closing the Southern border and keeping illegal immigrants out that the American public has already forgot it was a big problem. Trump said he would have been better off from a political standpoint stretching out his crackdown on illegal immigrants.

“Even my speechwriters, they say, ‘sir, nobody wants to hear about the border anymore. You’ve done it, it’s an incredible job you’ve done, but nobody wants to hear about it,’” Trump said during a White House press conference on August 3. “I should’ve taken a couple of years to do it.”

The president said it would’ve been a shrewd political move, since the public often has a “two-week memory” when it comes to accomplishments.

But Trump said he had no choice but to completely clamp down on illegal immigration after he inherited “the worst border maybe in world history” from ex-President Joe Biden. The president said Biden allowed 25 million people to illegally flood the USA on his watch.

“There’s not a third-world country that would have allowed it to happen, where people [were] coming in from prisons and coming in from mental institutions,” Trump said.

The Trump administration announced in July it deported 356,389 illegal immigrants so far in fiscal year 2026, A month earlier, DHS celebrated “zero releases” at the Mexican border over the last year.

Fox News explained zero releases “refers to U.S. border patrol not releasing illegal border crossers into the U.S. interior after apprehension. It does not mean zero illegal crossings or zero apprehensions.”
