‘The Guy Who’s Been Indicted Four Times?’ McGovern Mocks House Republican Wanting a President Who ‘Will Enforce These Laws’

Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) mixed it up with Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) during a meeting of the House Rules Committee on Monday.

McClintock testified before the committee and alleged President Joe Biden is willfully allowing migrants into the country illegally. Like most House Republicans, he said the president is not enforcing the nation’s immigration laws and so Congress should be “laying the foundation for an administration that will enforce these laws.”

His remarks came amid former President Donald Trump’s efforts to sabotage negotiations over border security and immigration in the Senate. In response, Democrats and some Republicans have criticized Trump for trying to thwart the talks so he can continue to attack Biden on immigration while campaigning. House Republicans, meanwhile, have indicated any such deal would be dead on arrival.

“Ultimately, this is not gonna be fixed with laws that won’t be signed and won’t be enforced if they are signed,” McClintock said. “It’s going to be fixed by the American people deciding whether they want to continue down this path. This ultimately is in their hands. ”

McGovern seemed perplexed by McClintock’s comments:

MCGOVERN: I’m just a little confused by that last statement. You say this is not gonna be fixed with laws. What the hell are we doing here then?”

MCCLINTOCK: We are laying the foundation for an administration that will enforce these laws and strengthen–

MCGOVERN: The guy who’s been indicted four times on 91 felony counts?

MCCLINTOCK: I can’t foresee the future, but I can foresee–

MCGOVERN: The guy who has been forced to pay $85 million for defaming a woman he sexually abused? I mean, that’s who– I mean, come on.

Last week a jury awarded E. Jean Carroll $83.3 million after Trump was found liable of defamation. The former president was also found liable for sexually assaulting her. Meanwhile, Trump is under indictment in four jurisdictions and faces 91 criminal counts. Two of those cases pertain to his attempt to subvert the 2020 presidential election results. He has pleaded not guilty to all of them and is the runaway favorite to win the Republican presidential nomination.
