‘Who Killed What?’ Trump Appears Unaware That Senior Russian General Was Killed in Car Bombing

President Donald Trump seemed not to know that a senior Russian general had been killed in a car bombing in Moscow several hours earlier.

The president maintains he is trying to broker a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, more than three years after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Russia’s western neighbor. Publicly, Trump has been more critical of Ukrainian Volodymyr Zelensky than of Putin.

On Friday, Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik was killed when the Volkswagen Golf he was in exploded in Moscow after the “detonation of a homemade explosive device filled with shrapnel,” according to Russia’s main criminal investigations division.

“The Kyiv regime once again shows its nature,” a Kremlin spokesperson alleged, calling it “terrorist activity.”

Hours later, Trump took questions from reporters aboard Air Force One en route to the funeral of Pope Francis.

“Mr. President, there was a car bomb in Moscow this morning that killed a Russian general,” one reporter noted over the sound of the plane. “Do you have any reaction to that?”

“Who killed what?” Trump asked.

“Russian general, killed by a car bomb,” someone reiterated.

“Wow,” the president replied. “No, I just heard– you’re just telling me that for the first time. Where did this take place?”

“It took place in Moscow,” came the reply.

“That’s hitting close to home,” Trump said. “That’s a big one. I’ll look at it. If I hear anything, I’ll let you know.”

Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on the bombing.

On the campaign trail, Trump said he would quickly bring an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine. However, last week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. may “move on” from trying to broker a deal if one is not reached soon.
