Among last night’s late-night lineup was David Letterman‘s interview with Lindsay Lohan. The troubled actress paid a visit to the show ahead of her upcoming stint in rehab — and Letterman didn’t let her forget it. While he did offer Lohan words of encouragement, the support was paired with a series of a blunt, somewhat uncomfortable questions about the actress’ addiction problems.
Letterman pressed Lohan with many questions, but didn’t get as many responses in return. “What are they rehabbing, first of all?” he questioned. “What are they going to work on when you walk through the door?”
“We didn’t discuss this in the pre-interview,” Lohan quipped, going on to note that she views the time in rehab as a good opportunity, “a blessing and not a curse.”
“Do you have addiction problems?” Letterman continued, only to be deemed “Dr. Phil” by his interviewee. “Is is alcohol? Do you drink too much?”
“We’ve discussed this in the past,” Lohan replied.
Later in the segment, the pair rehashed some of Letterman’s jokes about Lohan (who, to her credit, did appear to have a sense of humor about herself). The host touched all the bases, from stealing and community service to rehab and expressing surprise that she even showed up. Eventually, however, toward the end of the interview, he grew more sincere, encouraging her effort to seek treatment and praising her for coming on the show and talking about it (she even teared up).
Not surprisingly, the encounter is making headlines this morning — with some lauding Lohan’s poise and others finding Letterman’s treatment of her too harsh. What say you?
