Fox’s Bill Melugin Reports Border Crossings Have ‘Dropped Significantly’ Since Biden’s Executive Order
No one has covered the sharp increase in illegal border crossings under President Joe Biden more comprehensively than Fox News reporter Bill Melugin, who deserves credit for his dedication to bringing this story to light. His report that border crossing numbers have “dropped significantly” since Biden’s executive order went into effect is noteworthy, and so too is his criticism that followed shortly after.
Melugin was filing a report for Fox & Friends at 6 AM Thursday when, after he wrapped, Brian Kilmeade asked for his insights into the southern border following the executive order that went into effect roughly three weeks ago, in the context of the presidential debate set to tip off later this evening.
“The numbers have dropped significantly since that executive order went into effect in early June,” Melugin replied, but not before raising a reasonably cynical point about the timing of Biden’s action.
“But the big question, which I assume the Trump campaign is going to hit him with, is why did you wait over three years to do this executive order? You could have done it when the crisis first started in 2021 or 2022, but they waited until an election year to do it,” he said, amplifying expected criticism from former President Donald Trump. “And remember, he said over and over, I’ve done all I can do on the border. Evidently not.”
Melugin has previously expressed skepticism over the impact of the executive order when it went into effect.
“But you have to focus on the true details here. Yes, he is going to limit and restrict asylum to some people who crossed the border illegally in between ports of entry, but he’s going to continue bringing in tens of thousands of migrants per month using this CBP One app and flying them into the country via these parole flights,” asserted Melugin in early June. “So the illegal crossing numbers may go down a little bit. But he’s bringing more people into the country through quote unquote, ‘lawful pathways,’ which are just programs he’s created at the executive level.”
Border crossings are down 40%, but some believe that dip is in part due to the seasonal fluctuations and heat in the southern region of the United States that serves as a natural disincentive to make the dangerous trek in largely desert terrain.
