“Good news for President Donald Trump. There is one former presidential candidate standing with him today.” Jake Tapper reported on The Lead on Wednesday. “The bad news is, it’s David Duke.”
And thus began an impassioned, if not fiery, five-minute monologue from Tapper — whose monologues are widely considered to be among the best in the business. It was Tapper’s first opportunity to weigh in on Trump’s Tuesday afternoon press conference — at least during his show. And the anchor pulled no punches.
Tapper listed a number of the prominent Republicans who have condemned Trump’s Tuesday comments, including; Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, and Arizona Sen. John McCain — effectively making the point that almost no one is applauding Trump’s comments.
“You know who did applaud the president’s remarks?” Tapper said. “Racists. White supremacists.”
The Lead host added this in closing:
“[T]o act as if these defeated, intellectually destitute, pathetic ideologies and people have any moral standing as they rally to intimidate and vomit forth their treasonous filth, it is not only immoral, it’s unpatriotic. It’s un-American.”
