Morning Joe took on the apparent differences in President Donald Trump’s response to mass shootings and terror attacks Monday morning, in the wake of the attack on a Texas church that left 26 people dead.
Former FBI agent and MSNBC contributor Clint Watts noted that the excuse to not discuss gun control policy is always that “it’s too soon to talk about it,” though given the frequency of these shootings, there is never a good time.
MSNBC’s Elise Jordan added that while she is “a strong Second Amendment supporter,” she doesn’t “like the idea of needing to have a loaded postil in [her] purse to go to church on Sunday.”
Joe Scarborough noted that when he was in Congress, he was a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, with a good rating from the NRA. “Now you can’t even ban the bump stocks that turn semi-automatic weapons into automatic weapons,” he said.
“It’s insane,” Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski added.
Watts said that “we overreact to terror incidents in many ways, but we’ve had mass shooting after mass shooting and there’s been no real change.”
“If the president would just be himself on this and call for extreme vetting around background checks, that would be one positive step,” said former Congressman Harold Ford.
“Had it been a radical Islamic terrorist with a beard, named Mohammed, Washington would be melting down right now,” Scarborough concluded.
