‘Heartbroken’: TODAY Co-Hosts Get Emotional Discussing Matt Lauer’s Firing Over Sexual Misconduct
NBC News veteran Matt Lauer was fired in the early hours of Wednesday, after a colleague came forward detailing inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace, according to a memo sent out by NBC News chief Andy Lack.
Savanah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb, Lauer’s now-former colleagues on TODAY, addressed the firing on this morning’s episode, and their emotions ranged from shock to sadness.
“This is a sad morning here at TODAY, and at NBC News,” Guthrie said, before reading out Lack’s memo on air, her voice breaking.
Lack said it was the first complaint about Lauer’s behavior in 20 years with NBC News, but they had reason to believe it was “not an isolated incident.” (So yeah — as these situations usually go, expect a few more allegations of impropriety to trickle out.)
“We just learned this moments ago, just this morning,” a shaken Guthrie said after reading the memo. “As I’m sure you can imagine we are devastated, and we are still processing all of this.”
Guthrie added that they did not have any more information, but that they would continue to report on the story.
“For the moment, all we can say is that we are heartbroken.”
