NBC Counter-Terror Analyst: Trump Went From ‘Useful Idiot’ to ‘Witting Agent’ of Russia

“I’ve got some bad news for you: We are in serious trouble, because the United States, we’re the the end of this broad experiment that Russia’s been carrying out,” NBC counter-terrorism analyst Malcolm Nance said on Morning Joe Tuesday.

Nance, a retired Navy officer, just released a book The Plot to Destroy Democracy: How Putin and His Spies Are Undermining America and Dismantling the West, and appeared on MSNBC to detail Russia’s efforts to subvert the 2016 election — and President Donald Trump‘s potential ties to that effort.

Nance explained Vladimir Putin‘s work to control countries in Eastern Europe, arguing “the United States is the end of that experiment to transform global conservatism into a Russia based model.”

The analyst claimed that Trump’s views on Russia and NATO align with Putin’s, and that “no matter what Donald Trump does and says, it’s within the framework they created for him.”

“Donald Trump fundamentally does not believe in American democracy,” Nance declared. “He doesn’t. Look, he clearly doesn’t understand the Constitution,” he continued, adding Trump’s “operational philosophy” is “autocracy.”

“Is Donald Trump an agent of the Russian government?” Morning Joe‘s resident historian Jon Meacham asked.

“No, he’s not an agent of the Russian government, because that’s an actual technical term that’s used in the intelligence community,” Nance replied.

“I believe that he started out as a useful idiot, a person who had alignment with their philosophy, but was doing it for his own purposes,” he continued. “Then he became an unwitting asset, which is a person who is working with them but doesn’t understand that the strings are on him.”

“But I’ll tell you, July 27th, 2016 when he said ‘Russia, if you’re listening and you want to release Hillary Clinton’s 30,000 e-mails,’ he became known what we say in the community, as a witting asset.”

‘He will never betray Vladimir Putin,” Nance concluded, “he will never betray Russia.”
