Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Calls ‘Horrific’ Synagogue Crime Scene ‘One of the Worst That I’ve Seen’

Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich was visibly shaken as he talked about the crime scene at the Tree of Life synagogue following the horrific shooting this morning.

There is currently no active threat to the community, he confirmed, and the suspect is in custody.

Multiple reports indicate that at least eight people were killed. Hissrich did not confirm that and said they want to be sure of the number, while saying right now they believe there were 6 people injured, including 4 police officers.

“It’s a very horrific crime scene,” he said, the emotion clear in his voice. “It’s one of the worst that I’ve seen, and I’ve been on some plane crashes. It’s––it’s very bad.”

He declined to say much about what happened this morning while the investigation is underway.
