Rob Reiner Says on CNN That Russian Propaganda Has Successfully Tarred Them as Fake News

Rob Reiner and David Frum appeared on CNN Tuesday morning to promote their newly launched Committee to Investigate Russia, which seeks to inform the public about Russian interference in American elections and institutions — and Reiner lamented Russia’s apparently successful efforts to undermine the credibility of the American media, including CNN.

Reiner, a film director and political activist, and Frum, former President Bush speechwriter and senior editor at The Atlantic, discussed their motives for launching the initiative.

Reiner said that in the past, when the country has been attacked people put aside partisanship and stand together, but that with Russia’s interference in the 2016 elections, “this is the first time that that didn’t happen.”

“And I don’t know that the public understands the gravity of what the Russians were able to do and continue to do here in the United States,” he continued. “They attacked us. They’re trying to undermine our democracy.”

After playing the committee’s first ad, narrated by Morgan Freeman of course, CNN’s John Berman pointed out that many of the members of the Committee — including Charlie Sykes and Max Boot — are vehemently opposed to President Donald Trump.

Berman also challenged the premise that the Russia investigation does not get enough media coverage, to which Reiner conceded that “the media does talk about it a lot.”

“And for whatever reason it doesn’t seem to be penetrating into what I refer to as the real Americans, patriotic Americans that wave the flag,” Reiner said.

Towards the end of the interview, Reiner stressed the degree to which Russia has disrupted not just the election, but also American institutions like the media.

“The level of their intrusion into our democracy is greater than it has ever been before and they have succeeded,” Reiner explained. “In past times, they’ve always tried to spread propaganda. Now they’ve actually succeeded.”

“They have successfully made you guys fake news,” Reiner then said of CNN. “Made the mainstream media and American journalism fake news.”

“Well they’re trying, I wouldn’t say it’s successful,” CNN’s Alisyn Camerota contended.

Reiner replied that Russia propaganda has been successful with “a lot of people” who now “discount CNN.”
