Atlantic Reporter Clare Morgana Gillis Captured In Libya

Atlantic reporter Clare Morgana Gillis is among four journalists captured in Libya Tuesday afternoon by forces loyal Muammar al-Gaddafi.

The other journalists include GlobalPost.com contributor James Foley, Spanish photographer Manu Brabo, and South African photographer Anton Hammerl. The Atlantic was alerted to Gillis’ capture this morning, and sent the following in a press release:

In past cases, journalists captured in eastern Libya have been taken to Surte within 48 to 72 hours, at which point they are transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Turkish embassy in Tripoli then typically negotiates the journalists’ release with the Libyan government.

Editor James Bennet adds that Gillis “was reporting on the situation in Libya on behalf of The Atlantic and other American publications. We appeal to the Libyan authorities for her immediate and safe release, and for that of the three other journalists detained with her.”
