Donald Trump’s big tweet of the day for Thursday going into Christmas Weekend concerned expanding the United States’ nuclear arsenal, immediately becoming one of the big news stories of the day. But it gets a bit more complicated when you consider that Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin made similar comments about his nation earlier in the same day. Agence France-Presse is reporting that during a meeting of Russia’s defense ministry, Putin made comments that were noticeably similar to what Trump tweeted several hours later.
The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 22, 2016
“We need to strengthen the military potential of strategic nuclear forces, especially with missile complexes that can reliably penetrate any existing and prospective missile defence systems,” Putin said. “We must carefully monitor any changes in the balance of power and in the political-military situation in the world, especially along Russian borders, and quickly adapt plans for neutralising threats to our country.”
Putin later added that “the Syrian army received considerable support, thanks to which it carried out several successful operations against militants.”citing the mission as a success. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu followed up that comment by mentioning that Russia has “tested 162 types of modern armaments during military campaign in Syria” which “have shown to be highly effective.”
