Fox News Never Contacted About Failed James O’Keefe Stunt

As details emerged over conservative activist James O’Keefe’s remarkably ugly and failed attempt to lure CNN’s Abbie Boudreau onto a boat “filled with sexually explicit props and then record the session,” a number of media watchdog sites have predictably weighed in to reasonably vilify O’Keefe’s plan. Media Matters also reported the potential involvement by their arch nemesis Fox News. But a FNC spokesperson tells Mediaite that the cable news network knew nothing of the plan.

First some background.

Earlier today CNN reported that O’Keefe had attempted to punk Boudreau by getting her on a boat “filled with sexually explicit props and then record the session.” The stated goal of the stunt? Best to let CNN report:

According to the document, O’Keefe was to record a video of the following script before Boudreau arrived: “My name is James. I work in video activism and journalism. I’ve been approached by CNN for an interview where I know what their angle is: they want to portray me and my friends as crazies, as non-journalists, as unprofessional and likely as homophobes, racists or bigots of some sort….

“Instead, I’ve decided to have a little fun. Instead of giving her a serious interview, I’m going to punk CNN. Abbie has been trying to seduce me to use me, in order to spin a lie about me. So, I’m going to seduce her, on camera, to use her for a video. This bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who comes on at five will get a taste of her own medicine, she’ll get seduced on camera and you’ll get to see the awkwardness and the aftermath.

Nearly everyone – from both left and right – rushed to decry the alleged actions of O’Keefe, including liberal media watchdog Media Matters (which predictably inserted Fox News into the controversy) Writer Joe Strupp‘s in-depth report on the ill-fated and sordid affair included the following:

Documents later obtained by CNN reportedly include an elaborate plan by O’Keefe and his associates to embarrass Boudreau with some kind of seduction scene.

Other documents indicate an alleged plot to set up Boudreau or another CNN reporter with a false story about Sarah Palin or the Tea Party and later expose that it was false, possibly through Fox News.

“They call Fox the ‘friendlys’ and their allies,” Boudreau says about the documents. “It was a very detailed plan to trick myself or another CNN reporter to report a false story and then give the heads up to Fox News.”

O’Keefe first gained notoriety with his infamous (and now debunked) short films shot with hidden camera that effectively took down ACORN. When that story first broke on Big Government, it was immediately picked up across nearly all of Fox News shows, including both their news and opinion programs. So it certainly stands to reason that O’Keefe would consider Fox News a “friendly,” as Strupp quoted Boudreau to say.

However, Mediaite contacted Fox News for comment, to which they responded, “FOX News had no knowledge of the stunt and no one on any of the news or opinion shows were contacted about it.”

“Media Matters also reported the potential involvement by their arch nemesis Fox News. ”

If Media Matters is the source, the information must be wrong. Face it, Media Matters doesn’t waste its time telling the truth — they realize that other outlets already handle that responsibility. They understand quite clearly that the role of Media Matters has been, is, and always will be to spread disinformation.

The following is NewsBusters publisher and Media Research Center (MRC) founder Brent Bozell’s statement regarding news of James O’Keefe’s sting operation attempt to embarrass CNN.

The MRC unequivocally denounces James O’Keefe for his attempted assault on CNN. It isn’t just childish and immature; it’s ugly, dishonest and filthy. There is no place in the conservative movement for this type of behavior and that’s exactly what I warned about in a commentary piece I submitted to CNN.com just two days ago.

“Could the Citizen Journalist abuse the public trust?” I wrote in this piece that should run in the next few days. “Hypothetically, of course. Conservatives must all guard against this. Let there be scrutiny, by all means.” And I repeat: there must be scrutiny.

Bottom line: We want nothing to do with O’Keefe or his dirty antics.

Let’s see if they are any more accurate than the last breaking scandal about O’Keefe. Remember the new Watergate. The bugging that turned out not to be a bugging. The wiretapping equipment that wasn’t wiretapping equipment. Etc. etc. etc.

MAn this is some funny stuff. Do you have a sense of perspective? Fox has jumped all over false videos from OKeefe and Brietbart,

It makes sense that Okeefe might think Fox would be interested in the videos since they’ve done it before.nobody accused Fox of anything.

My point is the same people who are denouncing OKeefe now, were eager to publish his BS videos before. They owe ACORN a apology in their role in the slander. They’ll gladly ditch OKeefe but won’t seem to take responsibility for their own involvement in his lies.

What Fox News wingnuts have said about their Perv Wonder:

Breitbart: O’Keefe “is already well on his way to being one of the great journalists” and deserves a Pulitzer. On the September 10, 2009, edition of Fox News’ Hannity, BigGovernment.com founder Andrew Breitbart said of the ACORN videos, “It was two intrepid — a 25-year-old by the name of James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles. She wants to be a journalist and I think James is already well on his way to being one of the great journalists.” Breitbart added that “I’m just here to tell you that James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles are heroes for doing this because we all knew that this is what happens at ACORN, to a degree.” Breitbart further stated of O’Keefe and Giles on the September 14 edition of Hannity, “[L]et me tell you. I’ve never been more proud of two people in my entire life.” In a September 21 Washington Times column, Breitbart further wrote, “At the very least, filmmaker James O’Keefe and actress Hannah Giles deserve a Pulitzer Prize for their expose of deep corruption and unspeakable immorality at the ACORN housing division. But more important, I won’t rest until they receive a grant to continue their partisan artistry from the National Endowment for the Arts.”

Beck: Giles’ “partner in crime” O’Keefe is “courageous.” Glenn Beck hosted Hannah Giles, who helped produce the videos, during the September 10, 2009, edition of his Fox News program and stated, “I talked to you on the radio program earlier today. I encouraged you not to expose yourself anymore. I think that you are a very courageous person. I think your partner in crime here, or exposing crime is also courageous.” (All television transcripts were accessed via the Nexis database.)

Hannity: O’Keefe is a “pioneer in journalism.” Sean Hannity stated during the September 14, 2009, edition of his Fox News program, while hosting Breitbart and Giles, “Hannah, you are — you have taught the media a lesson. You should be very proud. Andrew, you’ve always been a brave, you know, pioneer in journalism and same with James O’Keefe.”

O’Reilly: “Frank and Conyers should be giving Ms. Giles and Mr. O’Keefe congressional medals.” Bill O’Reilly stated on the September 23, 2009, edition of his Fox News program, “Congressman Frank of Massachusetts and Congressman Conyers of Michigan want Congressional investigators to see if the undercover duo broke any federal laws. In addition, they want to find out exactly what ACORN is guilty of and they want to examine the group’s housing opportunities agenda.” O’Reilly added, “In my opinion, Frank and Conyers should be giving Ms. Giles and Mr. O’Keefe congressional medals for exposing corruption that apparently the Feds were not able to expose.”

Michael Flynn agrees O’Keefe is a hero, says O’Keefe is owed “an apology and also a thank you for rooting out these employees.” BigGovernment.com editor in chief Michael Flynn stated during the September 10, 2009, edition of Hannity, “You know, it really — and I really think, I mean, to bill [sic] on what Andrew said about them being heroes, I mean, I really think ACORN owes a big apology to the Mr. O’Keefe. This morning they put out a statement, you know, charging him with gotcha journalism and said he was committing defamation.” Flynn added, “And then a few hours later, apparently, doing their own investigation, realizing there was truth to what Mr. O’Keefe reported they fired these employees. So they definitely owe Mr. O’Keefe an apology and also a thank you for rooting out these employees.”

Coulter: O’Keefe and Giles are “so magnificent.” Appearing on the September 11, 2009, edition of Fox News’ Hannity, Ann Coulter said of O’Keefe and Giles, “Those were the two most unbelievable pimps and prostitutes I’ve ever seen. She has perfect skin, gorgeous hair. Oh, and I really liked the fur coat. I love that.” She added, “These young right-winners [sic], they are so magnificent. Why can’t they — they be the Republicans in Washington?”

Lowry: O’Keefe deserves “award for impactful guerilla journalism.” In a September 15, 2009, post titled “ACORN” on the blog The Corner, National Review editor Rich Lowry wrote: “If there’s an award for impactful guerilla journalism, O’Keefe, Giles, and Breitbart should win it.”

Examiner.com’s Dupray: “Looks like a Pulitzer might be in order.” In a September 15, 2009, Examiner.com post, “DC Republican Examiner” Bill Dupray stated, “The big takeaway here is not even that ACORN is a bunch of criminals, it is that it took two conservative investigative journalists to do the job of the entire main stream media. Looks like a Pulitzer might be in order.”

Wallace featured “fascinating character” O’Keefe as “Power Player of the Week.” During the September 27, 2009, edition of Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace named O’Keefe the “Power Player of the Week,” and stated, “Rarely does a piece of investigative reporting get such a big and quick response, and rarely is the undercover reporter such a fascinating character.”

Steven Clark: O’Keefe should be “immunize[d]” for his “heroic efforts” in producing ACORN videos. Attorney and frequent TV legal analyst Steven Clark stated on the October 2, 2009, edition of The O’Reilly Factor, “What I hope the attorney general will do is immunize these two filmmakers for their heroic efforts and put them on the witness stand so at least they can testify as to what’s going on out there. I doubt you will see them prosecuted. I hope they look carefully at what they were doing before they did it. They put themselves in harm’s way here because of the bigger problem that they saw with ACORN.”

Bolling on ACORN videos: “I’m all for this, you know, dressing up and catching them.” Fox Business Network Happy Hour co-host Eric Bolling said to O’Keefe on November 20, 2009, “I’m all for this, you know dressing up and catching them doing things that are frankly illegal, immoral and unethical.” Bolling went on to characterize O’Keefe as an “investigative journalist, just like, remember, ‘To Catch a Predator.’ ”

Fox Business’ Willard: “[E]verybody applauds” O’Keefe. Also on the November 20, 2009, edition of Happy Hour, co-host Cody Willard said to O’Keefe, “[O]ne of the things — I think everybody applauds you in going after people that are, I don’t know, helping prostitutes and pimps and child trafficking happen on the planet instead of, I don’t know reporting that type of stuff. But I got to ask you, you know the money that goes into ACORN, we’re talking about $100 million here and there, what not, why did you choose ACORN as the target when there are, I don’t know, much bigger targets, for example, say Goldman Sachs, the Wall Street bailouts, all kinds of other corruption out there?” Willard later added, “James, I tell you what, man, little brother is watching big brother. Orwell had it wrong. That’s the man right there” and told O’Keefe to “[r]ock on, man.”

Yes, the tyrrany of rising expectations quashed. You clung to the Breitbart/O’Keefe fabrication like a Ukrainian peasant woman to an onion. Your proof that President Obama, despite a significant and comfortable win of the popular vote and a smackdown in the Electoral College, won only because of ACORN. When that “proof” was shown to be as fraudulent as Christine O’Donnell’s resume, your silly suppositions shattered. And, now, you have only shrill defense of the wunderkind gone wrong. If I had a tissue, I might shed a tear. As it is, I don’t want to risk a bit of saline-high water spotting my Countess Mara.

And I said that when, exactly?

    OBSESSION.

@dandmb50 CNN is worried that O’Keefe is trying to damage their credibility? Give me a break, they did that themselves a long time ago. And yesterday on Rick’s List he spent about 20 minutes talking about this “story.” Why is CNN talking about this, to promote their special this weekend from the women that is being “punked.” Then they say Fox News has something to do with it, that seems to be a stretch and we don’t even know the other side of the story yet. If you take out all the repeat stories on Rick’s List the 2 hour show is about 25 minutes long.
But then I guess nobody is watching CNN for more than 10 minutes anyway.

And let me say this. It isn’t a mere coincidence that two of the biggest douchebags in media–James O’Keefe and Andrew Breitbart–have had such a close working relationship with Fox News.

“Working” relationship? You’re an idiot. O’Keefe is neither employed nor paid by Fox. There is no “working” relationship. IDIOT!

The transcripts of what. The entire video or just the edited bits? How exactly do you know. He eventually had to produce the full videos to avoid charges being pressed and that’s when they were debunked.
One of the men in the videos presented as helping him a crime pumped him for info and called the cops after OKeefe left the office. Did that make the rounds at Fox. Some folks were playing around because they saw through him immediately but it was all portrayed as real.
What’s the wire tapping meme? Seems real to me all though overreaction is fairly common.

Fox in particular is extremely complicit in this guys lies in the ACORN story. Considering the amount of coverage they gave it perhaps a story or two about the dishonest editing in the tapes is appropriate.

    You got served!

..and just so you know, the “wiretapping meme” as you and your republican’ts like to call it to act like he did nothing wrong.

He’s still serving his 18 month probation and has yet to work off the 100 hours of community service, he was charged with entering federal property under false pretenses for the purpose of committing a felony — specifically, “maliciously interfering with a telephone system operated and controlled by the United States of America,” but it was reduced to a misdeameanor as the defendants never got the opportunity to interfere with the telephone systems and stated that they had only impersonated telephony technicians to get into the offices and see if staff was answering the phones.

Yeah, he’s such an honest young man, and so the attorney general (who’s son was one of O’Keefe’s accomplices) decided to be lenient.

    NOW WHAT!?

You should take Whitney Houston’s past statement to heart. “crack is whack”.

O’Keefe didn’t “bust” ACORN. Thatr’s a wingnut lie. The tapes were faked. Not that Fox or its wingnut followers care about the truth. You never have.

“One of the men in the videos presented as helping him a crime pumped him for info and called the cops after OKeefe left the office. Did that make the rounds at Fox.”

No, he called his cousin, who is a cop, two days later. His cousin told another officer who worked with the human smuggling division.

ACORN’s David Lagstein issued the following statement regarding Vera:

After release of the second San Diego video by the unscrupulous partisan videographers, we have reevaluated our assessment of the incident that occurred last month. No paperwork was filed, but the video reflects unacceptable conduct that contradicts the earlier statements of ACORN Organizer Juan Carlos Vera. He has been terminated. San Diego ACORN and ACORN offices around the country are continuing to halt our service programs pending the results of the evaluation of the independent Advisory Council and we are continuing to fight on our campaigns: stopping foreclosures, affordable, accessible health care, and a strong education for all children.

The now-former ACORN worker said he was merely trying to help the pair because he thought they were in danger.

Geez, you are just full of lies and crazy pants insinuations.

I don’t think I read anyone that thought what he did was a good idea. Most people said he went too far. What they DO say is the truth – that he was NOT charged with wire tapping, nor was that their intent. He was charged with a misdemeanor for entering a federal building under false pretenses. Something everyone I know thought was a bad idea.

O’Keefe is heard in the video saying, “I want to buy a house and this is my girlfriend, and she’s a prostitute.”
O’Keefe is heard in the video saying, “I want to buy a house and this is my girlfriend, and she’s a prostitute.”

Vera said he was told the woman needed to escape her controlling pimp, who wouldn’t let her start a new life.

Immediately, Vera said he offered to call the police but the filmmaker quickly stopped him.

“Don’t call the police because I’m gonna be a lawyer,” O’Keefe said in the video.

he did contacts his cousin who is s cop and was refereed to someone in human trafficking. That seems to indicate he wasn’t trying to help them smuggle underage girls in. Doesn’t it?
Once you know the video was edited it becomes a lot harder to believe any of it. If the unedited videos had been made available from the start it would have been a lot more believable. The whole BS with the pimp costume was a joke.

this from the report by the CA AG

SUMMARY OF INVESTIGATIVE FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS

ACORN consisted of a tangle of separate affiliate organizations whose activities and management were confusingly entertwined. ACORN in California was disorganized and very poorly managed. It failed to recruit, train and monitor its employees to ensure compliance with California law.

The recordings establish ACORN employees across the country were willing to discuss with O’Keefe and Giles their plan to conduct a prostitution business, and a few even made suggestions for disguising profits and avoiding detection by law enforcement agencies. The most offensive conversations occurred outside California.

So the lies told by Brietbart abd OKeefe revealed that ACORN had some bad employees, but the dishonest exaggeration that appeared on the news day after day painted the entire organization with the same brush.
