Let’s Start a Conspiracy Theory: Tarantino’s Collusion With Town Hall Protesters
Earlier this week Rachel Sklar looked at who was behind the Obama-as-Hitler posters, but we’ve got another theory.
We joked about it during yesterday’s Office Hours – maybe all these posters and protesters are part of a secret viral marketing campaign for Quentin Tarantino‘s new film, “Inglourious Basterds“!
Tarantino’s new film is out today, and focuses on “a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as ‘The Basterds'” who “are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis.”
One of the featured characters – Adolf Hitler (played by Martin Wuttke).
As Rachel said during Office Hours, “The Hitler meme reached the point of having to address it and discuss it.”
More and more Obama-as-Hitler posters, or Nazi-related signs are showing up at town halls. The media has picked up on it, and both sides of the debate are discussing it in different ways. The right brings up all the liberal protesters who were holding Bush-as-Hitler signs – where was the coverage then? And the left uses it as another example of dangerous leaps being taken against our current Commander-in-Chief.
For Tarantino, the discussion means Hitler is hot right now! When both sides of the health care debate decide to take a break this weekend and head to the movies, maybe they’ll steer toward a Hitler-related selection. Killing Nazis never sounded more trendy.
We’ve already heard of accusations of plants (or astroturf activism) from both sides as well – so why not from Tarantino? He gets the Nazi conversation going, the cablers get something to cover and town halls protesting gets taken to a new level.
Of course, we don’t actually believe this…but if he can keep the Pulp Fiction briefcase secret going for this long, who knows what other mysteries Tarantino has up his sleeve?
