Grover Norquist, president of the anti-tax group Americans for Tax Reform, joined Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC on Wednesday where he defended Congressional Republicans who passed a deal to resolve the fiscal cliff crisis by agreeing to increase tax rates on high-income earners.
Norquist began by saying that President Barack Obama set up the fiscal cliff in the first place by abandoning his support for the Bush tax cuts once his reelection was secured. He said that, while he found it lamentable that Obama fought for and won an increase in tax rates, the GOP bears little responsibility for that.
“He got his tax increase, but he can’t claim Republican fingerprints on his tax increase,” Norquist said.
“Wait a second,” Mitchell interjected with a laugh. “We’re not living in the Alice in Wonderland world here. There is a tax increase for wealthy Americans. It’s literally a tax increase. Rates are up.”
Norquist replied that Republicans worked to make the tax rates under Bush, which had just expired, permanent. He went on to say that Obama has lost all his leverage with Congress, having secured the only thing that he campaigned on – a tax increase.
