Is MSNBC’s Morning Joe Team Pitching Themselves For A Move To CNN? (Updated)

The NY Post is reporting that MSNBC co-hosts of Morning Joe, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski recently talked up the idea of a move to CNN with Time Warner chief Jeff Bewkes. Their show frequently generates headlines, yet the ratings often don’t correlate with the popularity Morning Joe enjoys in media and political circles, and the NY Post suggests Mika and Joe want a larger platform.

Given the recent departure of their executive producer Chris Licht, the Morning Joe team may in fact be ready for a move, as the report also claims that famed agent Ari Emmanuel (brother of now Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel) has been recruited to help. And given that this alleged pitch took place at the Newhouse School journalism awards lunch last week, with other journalists buzzing around, it seems that if true, Mika and Joe aren’t shy about their desire to mix up the location where they drink their morning coffee.

Update: Scarborough tells TVNewser:

“Mika and I had nice conversation with a CNN executive who joked that we should bring our show to CNN. We laughed, exchanged pleasantries and left the event. Mika and I plan to work at NBC for a long time.”

Air America Radio had the same problem, lots of Liberal media hype but no audience.

  • Big Eddie

Morning Joe and Meeker B. probably want to get away from the madhouse at MSNBC .

But , they have to know they’ll run into CNN inmates like Toobin , Zakaria , Carville , Behar , Spitzer , etc . in the lockerroom .

Do you really think the hostility level at CNN could be as bad as at MSNBC?

CNN a larger platform? I can understand if they want to leave MSNBCDNC and move to a less idiotic and vile atmosphere, but “larger platform” would make no sense.

Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski are the leftovers of a biased Liberal media, same with Katie Couric.

Maybe they know something we don’t.

Maybe MSNBC is trying to make room for “Morning Wiener.”

MSNBC’s platform is DC and NYC, Morning Joe is slightly more Midwestern.

Probably not . Still the same kind if attitude , though . Just never having Donny Deutsch on would be a big plus .They wouldn’t have to worry about The Torch burning them down , either .

Actually , they could name it : ” MORNING JOE WITH MIKA AND A PACK OF SNEERING LEFTIES “

  • Just my Opinion

The only way they could possibly increase viewership is to go to
    FOX.
    Don’t think any slots there.
CNN not going to cut it for them!
Can you imagine, though, having to go into MSNBC daily, and be around those clowns?
    Yikes !!!

I see from your job application that you’re fluent in eye rolling.

I love Morning Joe. It’s the only cable news show I can stand. At least if they move networks they can finally call out MSNBC’s primetime hacks.

  • Rivermont

Did they forget what happened to David Schuster?

  • lane

Smart move. I actually like the show, but since MSNBC is so crazy, I just don’t go to the channel anymore. The nutty MSNBC nighttime crew is really hurting the NBC news brand in very subtle but significant ways. I notice that with the Today show as well. Too many of the MSNBC have shown up on the Today Show, and it just makes me turn the channel. I suspect if they did some market research, they’d find I’m not alone. Most people in the US are moderates after all.

A move to CNN is a good fit for both CNN and the show.

  • felixw

Certainly this show does not fit in with the rest of the programming at MSNBC. Almost every other host and guest on MSNBC always express identical opinions of every issue. I haven’t seen such unanimity since Saddam Hussein got 100% of the vote in his 2002 reelection.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/2331951.stm

So MSNBC should give its core audience what it wants – the full propaganda treatment in which all dissenting views are silenced. They are almost there now, and with a little tweaking they could reach that goal.

Lane & Felix are two smart guys!
I only watch MSNBC to relieve curiosity for a few seconds at a time. If the TV remote control had never been invented, NOBODY would ever watch their ‘prime time’ stooges.

I suppose they could go to FOX “News” and deal with the perversions of Bill-o, Meghan, Dick, Ollie, Newt and whatever that thing with O’Van Susteren is.

  • Just my Opinion

CNN should , if this is true, write into the contract, that if Joe
invites, Donny Doershce, Mark Halperen, Mike Barnickle, Richard Wolfe,
John Heillemann, Joan Walsh, David Gregory, within 300 yards of that Studio, the contract will
    be voided immediaitely.
They can keep Willie around for a while as Gofer .

  • Sanders Youth

So will Joe be suspended for talking to CNN the way David Schuster was? Probably not.

  • KirbbDogg2000

What happend to Joe and Mika following Chris to CBS ? If there really doing this. It’s for 2 resion’s,

    1. There really just playing hardball with MSNBC to get a better deal out of them.

    2. Jeff Zucker is not there to kiss there ass and tell them You guys be here for years to come. I do think the only reson they had stayed on the air long was because of there friendship with Zucker. With Zucker out there not untouchable anymore.

  • TfT

They are so full of themselves;I doubt CNN would have them, even in the desparate position CNN finds itself.

  • mmars

Joe and Mika are NOT at all important to the show. CNN could create their own morning political round table for the morning hours. They just need to get the Romans lady off the tv screen. Ali Velshi is actually quite good. They could add John King also.

  • jo hoochie

No matter where they go , hopefully out the door forever, it will not matter. They stink like all the rest on MSNBC! I’m hoping MSNBC hires Alan Combs from Fox, he would fit right in with the rest of the all liberals on that station. Anytime I see Alan on I turn the channel. I do like Alex Witt on MSNBC. She seems sane.

Donnie is sooo annoying. Having someone talk about brand management, such as Donnie (who can’t manage his own), is just hard to fathom. He failed on CNBC. He had a short-lived (unless still existent but I only saw it once) small-time segment of something romantic related on Bravo (was fit into the commercial slot during a program that I was watching and I knew it would bomb so I wanted to watch it bomb live) and haven’t seen a clip of him airing on Bravo since.

  • DonnaK

Not enough people like either of these 2 to be popular on CNN….It is a ploy to get more money out of MSNBC, Mika already thinks she is under paid….They should both just be happy to have a job anywhere, I watch a little bit of them some mornings, but mostly they are unbearable…him laughing like an idiot, and her acting like an idiot with nothing to ADD to conversation….They have some interesting guests, that is the best I can say for them…

  • NonElite

If I were the one making the decision on Morning Joe moving to CNN, I’d have to insist on leaving Mika behind. Too often, she is just a speed bump in the discussions. Even though she doesn’t add enough to the show, she seems to think she is much more valuable. However, CNN has made some pretty bad hiring decisions lately, including Eliot Spitzer and Piers Morgan, so they obviously don’t look at things the same way as me.

  • BatBoy

That way, Joe and Mika could go from a solid 3rd in ratings to a solid 4th.

It would be a great move….

  • jacobjakeu

It’s totally understandable why MORNING JOE NEEDS CNN… but CNN DOES NOT NEED MORNING JOE.

They need a FRESH VISION! They need to recruit people and ideas that will excite viewers… not POORLY RATED SNOOZEFESTS from FAILING NETWORKS like MSNBC. That’s not the way up.

If they go for this weak morning show, then I totally give up on CNN. They haven’t a clue… or any self-respect. It’d be pathetic.

Transition Dana Loesch with Joe. That would be a good show. Still bring on liberals but actually have a Conservative on the program. :)

Schuster did not get punished for talking to CNN. He shot a pilot for them without telling his boss and their competitor!! Of course, he deserved to be taken out for that. As much as I personally hate MSNBC, it’s the one move they did that was totally right.

  • Dem4Ever

    Hmmm…rats jumping ship…typical Liberal behaviour

  • BatBoy

This is just another example of the “House Cleaning” the new bosses are doing at MSNBC.

    Very predictable!

    The other gonners…
    Martin “the Brit”
“Sink” -meaning he is going down the drain
    Andrea Mitchel
Larry O’Donnel – no one watches him anyway
    Tingles is a goner.
Maddow – offeres nothing to anyone who can reason….
whoops it is you lefties who like here right???
    Therefore Lefties can’t reason!

are you kidding me, morning joe beats CNN’s morning show in the ratings, so how can you say morning joe needs CNN, if anything CNN would love to have morning joe to help give a little jump into the morning ratings

  • xraex413

why does everyone talk about left, right, liberal and all that other crap. All of you are playing right into their hands, this is why we will always have a political divide in this country. Democrats and Republicans are party first then country and they could careless about us the people. All they want to do is build up their party and be re-elected, and everyone who falls into these false debates and pointing the finger saying liberals do this dont do that conservatives do this and that whatever it is were just all little pawns in a big political game. How do you think voting would go if their were no political party in front of a candidates name, thats when people would truly vote for someone they agree with, not someone who is in their political party.

I know all people want to move up in their profession, but Mika & Joey seem obsessed with trying to grab headlines for themselves, rather than doing a show for the audience….I guess because they have both been dumped, they are constantly worried about it….It just seems a little too phony lately, they are really trying to bring on the movie & TV stars, and Mika almost wets herself being around these people….

  • puck30

Wait! weren’t they supposed to become the next Regis and Kelly on sydicated TV?

And what’s going on with great radio show revamping into a three hour must listen?

  • patricia5

So, the progressive socialists on morning TV have ratings problem, and going to another station is going to make it all better. Put them on Oprah’s new channel. Put them ALL on Oprah’s new channel, that way the rest of us can block it from our sets, and not have to worry about looking at them while surfing. Now that’s convenient!!

    Hey BatBoy,
Breaking News…..it’s your guys who are losing viewers. Ms. Maddow is doing just fine, but go ahead and make fun of the Rhodes Scholar. We know smart people aren’t your types.

One would think Mrs. Greenspan would be a favorite of the right – she is the lady who sleeps with the man who idolized Ayn Rand after all.

Considering the source (NY Post) don’t bet the farm on it. I wouldn’t believe the weather forecast in the NYP. On the other hand, CNN could do a lot worse. They’ve had the dogma for years and years and years that viewers want more news in the morning. Bull. Viewers want news but want personalities more than anything. NBC figured this out years ago with “Today” as did ABC with “GMA”…..The CNN morning hosts have all been nice people but either did not have strong personalities or were told by their bosses to just read the news. Though it has improved significantly in the last 4 or 5 years, MSNBC is still “buried” on many cable systems next to FBN or the Farm Channel. The profile would be infinitely higher on CNN. Does that mean it will happen? Who knows.

  • mmars

    Hey posterchild,
Do you have a clue about George Bush’s education? If it works for Maddow then you must give Bush’s quality degrees the attention they deserve too! He had good grades too, by the way. He doesn’t have to hide them.

After Colby broke the story that Chris Licht was being courted by CBS and they were also interested in acquiring Joe and Mika, Brian Stelter reported in his story about Licht’s later announcement that CBS would definitely be interested in the idea.

It seems to me that testing the waters and measuring the interest of the competition is a good strategy, as they head into contract negotiations. With CBS already on the record as having an interest, if they could use or feign interest from CNN, it’ll help Mr. Emmanuel get his clients the best deal.

  • mitchflorida

    Joe yes, Mika no.

  • Emma

As a liberal, I can tolerate and even enjoy Joe Scarborough.

Mika, on the other hand, offers little, if anything. She’s either mugging for the camera or endlessly playing with her ridiculous scarves and thrusting her bosom. She’s an airhead, if that.

  • mitchflorida

I agree with you about Mika. Why Joe Scarborough wants to carry that ball and chain around , I have no idea.

I just don’t watch the show when I see her around

Ditto regarding the Mika comment. She is an absolute ZERO with negative intellectual prowess. GO, Mika, just GO. And take your phony outrage over “sexy” stories and shove it up your ass…. ESPECIALLY when you deride Joe & Willie for those stories, but try your best to have a faux orgasm when you say “Oh, Willie, IS IT TIIIIME??” intro’ing “News You Can’t Use.” YOU ARE A PHONY!

What makes Blowhard & Airhead think more people will watch them on CNN…? Even if those two moved to FOX News it would be the lowest rated show on FOX. They should just stay where they are and leave us alone.

Can they blow their horn any louder? “with the popularity Morning Joe enjoys in media and political circles”.

That says it all. Yes folks, that would be the corporate media that expects us to believe being popular is akin to being correct.

I can’t stomach watching that show, I can sleep through almost anything but if I hear Pat Buchanan screeching I can’t grab the remote quickly enough! Good riddance. I have a lot more resources for information than that coffee klatch show.

    Go for it, please!

Nice negotiation move. With NBC as a whole making reviews with management and talent why would this be a surprise to anyone? With the Comcast merger, it’s all about MAKING money not losing. And every penny that’s spent these days over at any part of NBC will be under the eyes of what news divisions especially hate. The bean counters. And it’s about time. The edict now at NBC is to stop burning cash and start making some. No part of this company gets a break, there’s a new sheriff in town and the same old crap doesn’t fly anymore. Plus this would be a great move to have Joe and Mika on board at CNN. That network needs all the help it can get.

What I think is that MSNBC should give Mika her own show in same timeslot, calling it Morning Sickness with Mika. Joe can move to CNN with the current show title. Mika can continue to host all the idiot regulars previously mentioned, including her bff Andrea MitcHELL and her so-important father. Joe gets permanent custody of Willie and Barnacle and Pat.

I completely disagree about Piers Morgan being a bad hiring decision, though. I like him better than Larry King.

  • xboeing

Jeez I’d love to comment about how good or crappy Morning Joe is but since it comes on at 6AM Pacific I don’t get to watch it. Even before I retired I was getting ready for work at that hour. NBC, how about putting one of your leftwing nuts on at that hour. Chris Mathews or Madow either one would work for me. HINT: maybe then you might be able to do a better showing than 12th. That’s according to a poll listed on huffington of all places. Who was the 12th man? Kieth Obermann that’s who. What a hoot.

  • Caramapeterson

Agree!!! Joe makes me nuts interrupting everyone…… Especially Mika. He is so arrogant and Rude! Mika’s opinions are stated so meekly. That is whenever she gets to speak. It was so much easier to watch when the two of them were on vacation. This has nothing to do with political opinions just presentation and attitude. The one thing I do appreciate is that representation for all sides seem to be balanced most of the time.

  • Jo Boyd

I wish Joe and Mika would get invited to host SNL.  Joe seems to have fun while giving great commentary even though he interrupts Mika to distraction.  I think they are such a great team and I love their show.  Watch it every morning.  Usually DVR it just in case I don’t wake up at 5 a.m.

Even better – Joe should run for President with Mika his Vice President!  Willie could be Joe’s Press Secretary!
    How about that?

  • Charlotte Soep

I love them both and wouldn’t miss a show!  However, I do agree that Joe talks over Mika every chance he gets, that get’s old real fast.  I love all thier guests, Liberal and Conservative, it gives far more meaning to understanding what is going on.  Keep up the good work.

Joe, lay off of Mika.  Give her a fighting chance once in a while.

I love the Morning Joe.  At work we have two news channels, News 12 which is lame and MSNBC until Cablevision required a cable box to receive MSNBC and had to switch over to CNN.  CNN tends to be repetitive and Morning Joe would bring some great  programming to CNN.
I am a Dem. but would vote for Joe if he ran for President just as long as Mika, Donny, Willie, Barnacle and Pat would be part of his Committee. Joe can knock some sense into the Dems and Rep

  • http://www.facebook.com/betty.m.tashjian Betty Murphy Tashjian

The only way I would watch the show is if they get rid of the AIR HEAD MIKA – JOE has very interesting observations, but that associate is so vapid I just turn it off —–YIKES —– can’t you find anyone other than a “daughter” of the National Security Adviser to “Carter no less”. She is so consumed with “her looks first” and her senseless defense of that leftest OBAMA is over the edge  – way over the edge. I think she is poison to the show. just one person’s opinion – oh and her little promo of acting like a big star is laughable if it weren’t so silly as well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/karen.boml Karen Boml

I THINK IT WOULD BE BETTER FOR JOE AND MIKA TO JUST GO AWAY.   NO MATTER WERE THEY GO IT’ WOULD STILL BE THE MORNING SCHMOE.  AND JOE YOU ARE NOT A CONSERVATIVE STOP CALLING YOURSELF ONE.  I THINK CNN SHOULD RECONSIDER BRING YOU OVER TO CNN, IF YOU COULD NOT GET THE RATINGS AT MSDNC, YOU WONT GET THEM AT CNN.

  • Loco Steve

Well i notice that these comments have been going for 8 months and their show is still on the TV
If anybody at MSNBC is reading this i watch the news all the time on your channel and i am very pleased to see Melissa Harris Perry on her own show  I just need to see a decent show to start the day off … Kick this pair over to CNN ..

  • Khrish

It;s always a better show when he’s not there. He’s such a bully. I watch because I do get news from the right without having to listen to those people on Fox News.

  • Khrish

    Well that’s where they are.

  • Khrish

You obviously do not watch the same show that I watch. I watch it because I can listen to another view from rightwing who are also intelligent and knowledgeable albeit I may not agree with them.

  • Khrish

God how I wish you were right about President Obama. Nothing would make me prouder than for him to be a leftist.

  • Khrish

Buchanan has gone……which clowns are you talking about?

  • Khrish

So you have watched the Primetime crew…..great aren’t they. If you really want to hate, watch on Saturday and Sunday when you can see some evn better shows like UP WITH CHIRS  and MELISSA  HARRIS-PERRY. Now you can really learn and meet some great guests. .

  • Khrish

If they are silenced, why do I get so upset with some guest as well as Joe on that show. I guess when people don’t agree with your view, you just don’t bother to even listen, albeit, it may produce another line of thought; you just refuse to have anyone disagree with you. And then you knock MSNBC.

  • Khrish

You mean Joe Scarborogh of course?

  • Khrish

I do agree with you on that. Which is the reason I watch it. I can get both sides of a situation….even though I might agree, usually, with the liberal view, at least I know why.

  • Khrish

CNN had a great morning show with Soledad Obrien and the Obrien man and they decided to kick it off, that’s how I found Morning Joe.

  • Khrish

I love Lawrence O’Donnel. He always has facts and can debate anyone. I love people who don’t just yell and screem on emotion; but makes you look like an ass with pure facts. I love the fact that you can hove your own opinions but not your own facts. I guess no-one on the right likes him because he can back up anything he says.

  • Khrish

I guess for the same reason people we send to Washington cares so little about the people who sent them there and stall anything fhat’s for the people, but take care of everything that’s for them. That’s why.

  • Khrish

Oh my, you must live a dull and boring life. Thank goodness I don’t have to be around you.

  • Khrish

    well said.

  • Khrish

NO HE DIDN’T! He just had money and his Father’s family name…..pedigree. Don’t lie!

  • Khrish

That’s because Joe is such a bully and rude just like Chris Christie.

  • Khrish

well if you say she does nothing for the show, why won’t you watch it when she’s around. I wouldn’t make any difference anyway, would it? You seem to contrdict your statement.

  • Khrish

Well I guess if you are used to glen beck , rush and that bunch of idiots, I suppose you would have that feeling.

If you don’t like the show how do you know so much about it? I have to hear from social media or MSNBC or some other media about anything that russ, or any of those wingnuts say because I wouldn’t waste my time listening to them. Yet you guys know so much about a network and personalities that you seemingly hate. What’s up with that??????
