Jon Stewart Introduces Puppet John McCain To Mock The Senator’s Growing Crankiness

video

The relationship between Senator John McCain and Daily Show host Jon Stewart has evolved in the last decade. There was a time that the presidential hopeful of 2000 was eager to show his comedic chops by allowing a Daily Show crew on his campaign bus dubbed “The Straight Talk Express.” But times change: people get older, wiser, and by some measure, even crankier. Perhaps these are a few of the reasons why Mr. Stewart could only interview “Puppet John McCain” to mark the Senator’s increased anger.

Thanks for the clip. I missed this last night. I was good.

  • TangledThorns

If you ask me it’s Stewart who’s become cranky that his dreams of a liberal utopia is going down in flames with Obama’s approval ratings and loss of power in Congress. Boo-hoo :)

  • tatboy

OK… I like Stewart, I usually fine him funny. This one missed the mark for me. But I’m sure most of his regular audience will love it.

Your noun/subject is “dreams” (“utopia is a noun/object of the preposition). “Dreams” is plural. Therefore, you ought to use a plural verb, in this case, “are”.

Your facts are also fatally flawed. President Obama’s approval ratings have actually risen markedly to very respectable levels. Also, the Republicans failed miserably in their efforts to win the Senate.

You seem to be wrong on so many levels.

Spot on, Jon…but it’s hard to parody someone when they have already become a parody of themselves.

I take delight in knowing that McCain will see this clip today and it will undoubtedly piss him off.

  • HyperboleKills

This was a very funny bit. The only sour note for me was the reminder that this guy just got re-elected and isn’t going anywhere for the next six years.

Didn’t Stewart just have a rally where he decried this sort of thing? Oh wait, that was a political stunt to save Democrats and liberals always think its ok when they do it.

You guys used to love McCain when he went against Republicans. Do you guys like any Democrats who go against Democrats? Is there such a thing?

He did and yes, that stunt failed miserably. Just like his dear leader, Obama. I bet Stewart has wet dreams about being Gibb’s replacement.

    Right on both counts.

I expect a denunciation from the Senate floor.

What he decried was the rancor and bitterness coming from people like McCain.

His job is to mock it.

I disagree with McCain on DADT, but he’s earned the right to his view with his military service. Maybe if you want to annoy him, Stewart can joke about how McCain can’t lift his arms all the way up since he lost that in his POW-related injuries. Seems about the same level of humor as the clip.

Jon Stewart is the cranky one here, not McCain. Red Eye is a much funnier show. Still juvenile humor, just more viewpoints.

Stewart’s a comedian, so this is his job. Problems is he’s only funny to his core audience now. That’s kind of sad.

‘they were gonna stand on his lawn(s) but they didn’t have enough people…stewert is hilarious and he’s got mccain dead to rights.
i heard him on imus this morning and he came off as the bitter old man stewert shows that he is…even imus told him so.

i believe his flip-flopping on dadt really is something that goes back to his days as a pow. you see, there weren’t any girls being held captive with them and mccain happened to be the ‘prettiest’ pow there. now it was because his arms were broken that he was unable to fight off advances from being taken advantage of and he looks back on this time endearingly…because he is a republican, he must now throw of his feelings for this type of behavior and the best way to do this is to oppose having gays in the military.

you sir are a sad sad person

McCain has been on the Daily Show more times than any other politician. He just stopped calling when he had to swing hard to the right in order to get the Republican nomination. I think, in all honestly, that upset Stewart because he had considered McCain a friend.

    you could be right sir

  • stoogedudes

Ok, I know a lot of conservatives dont’ like Stewart, but come on! How could you not laugh at puppet John McCain lifting his hand up to flip the bird? That was hilarious!

The only thing Stewart was “cranky” about was the stalling of the 9/11 First Responder’s Bill, and he had good reason to be “cranky”.

I completely agree, but it seems like he is stuck in the hard-right wing mode now. I’d have thought he’d lose the crankiness and come back to the middle where he’s usually been.

The voters of Arizona had a chance to elect a candidate with a strong stand on Immigration but now they are stuck with John McCain for another term.

Sarah Palin campaigned for him but she has a better position on Immigration than McCain:

I agree with this to a point but aside from juvenile humor, Jon was right on about a couple of points. People who live in 10 houses shouldn’t throw stones, and more importantly , some of those marines wit missing limbs are gay. A point that seems totally lost on McCain. McCain voluntarily opposed this bill and made the public statements he made about this issue for months now and contradicted himself as he asked for studies and then made excuses when the studies came out. His record as a POW doesn’t make him immune from criticism as a Senator making a bad call.

Yep, I’ve seen McCain on there many times and they always had friendly and funny disagreements until this last election where Jon called it as he saw it.

this was over the top and i shouldn’t have posted it…i am just disappointed because i really use to like and admire him as both a politician and a hero.

Good points on McCain. I do think he’s earned respect, but you’re right criticism itself is good. I think he truly doesn’t ‘get’ that gays are like everyone else. The irony is that he has served with gays, he just doesn’t know it. I know that I didn’t care much about the issue of gay marriage (I figured civil unions were basically the same). But once a friend was unable to marry her ‘partner’, then I just ‘got how wrong it is that we couldn’t celebrate her marriage in the same way anyone else gets to. I think that’s what people don’t understand who don’t deal with the issues directly,

Very honest of you to admit that. It seemed very basic to me. One of the beautiful things I admire about our founding principles is the idea that for me to have and defend certain rights , I have to defend those same rights for my fellow citizens. That’s the strength and the magic. When we look the other way while others are denied their equality , or worse, we actively participate in denying that equality, we endanger our own rights.

Anytime we set up a system where we’re telling people we’re allowing them to have things but they don’t quite deserve real equality, we’ve failed those founding principles.
