Juan Williams Recaps How He Got Fired From NPR… And The Note He Got After

video

We’ve covered (over-covered?) the Juan Williams saga since last week, but here’s one more, maybe final, chapter.

On FBN’s Follow The Money, the show he appeared on last week right before he was fired by NPR, he discussed the circumstances since it all went down.

Eric Bolling introduced the discussion by calling it Williams’ “big week.” “I would never describe it as a big week, but let me say this, it’s interesting to me,” said Williams. “I got off this set, and there was a call, please call the boss. So I called the boss back and it was, ‘you’re a bigot.’”

“She called you a bigot?” asked Alan Colmes, also on set. Williams said she didn’t, but that it was “the implication.”

Later, Colmes asked “did they ever apologize to you directly?” Said Williams:

She sent me a note, and said, ‘please call me at this number, I’m in and out, make arrangements,’ and I sent her back a note and said, ‘you know what, you wouldn’t talk to me after you fired me, you wouldn’t apologize, you said I needed a psychiatrist. What am I supposed to talk to you about now?’

Not what you’d call a clean break. But after the Restoring Sanity rally, the NPR story likely gets pushed to the backburner, for good. Here’s the clip (via Johnny Dollar):

Why will no one ask Obama about Soros ? Soros gives big money to NPR . 1-2 days later , they get rid of the Fox guy on a pretext . The White House and CAP and Soros think they’ve scored a victory . It backfires and exposes NPR and the liberals . At least , somebody could ask Gibbs .

  • TfT

    Steve:

I don’t think the story has been over-covered (this hasn’t gotten near the attention that some other absurd stories have received) and I don’t think this is the last chapter.

Remember, there will be formal and official calls to defund NPR; the NPR BOD is meeting next week. I would watch for Shiller to be fired. When that happens, the story might disappear from the news, but until then, I wouldn’t mark this as the final chapter.

Enough of the NPR business, let’s hope this is it, and back to irrelevance where they were before. You can tell the thing that bothers Williams is the “bigot” implication, and it’s understandable. It’s a huge insult. And we’re talking about a guy who has written 5 books on the civil rights movement. It just makes NPR and Vivian Schiller look that much more cloddish. The Soros money shows exactly what NPR is really all about.

  • paulmdoro

You may not like NPR, but they are hardly “irrelevant.” Far from it in fact. 27 million people a week listen to NPR news programs, more than Rush Limabugh. And they are also one of the last news organizations committed to comprehensive coverage of international news. As James Fallows points out, they have 17 foreign bureaus. So bash NPR all you want, but they are relevant and important.

Also, Williams is loving every second of this. He already cashed in ($2M a year for a contributor’s role!) and appears to be relishing the constant media coverage.

    Way to go, Juan!

  • paulmdoro

Suddenly the right loves him. Hilarious.

As Olbermann would say, any disagreement with a black man is racist.

They (NPR) are relevant to you, not to me. You can pay for it, not me.

Look at the demographics of the NPR listener and tell me why I shoud pay for some double doctorate holding, birkenstock wearing, low fat latte sipping socialist to hear his daily dose of anti conservative horseshit.

Pay for your own news ya leeches.

We don’t love him, his politics suck. We just respect his right to have stupid beliefs, obviously you tolerant souls don’t. Christ he’s on your side and you still kick the shit outta him. You guys are something else.

I’m so glad you don’t engage in ignorance by repeating simplistic stereotypes of NPR listeners. I am nothing like that and neither are the people I know who listen to NPR. You have no idea what you’re talking about and probably haven’t listened to a minute of NPR in your life. Keep that mind closed though. It’s obviously working out well for you.

The left is very strict. Agreeing with them 99% of the time doesn’t cut it.

You and respect should never be used in the same sentence, unless it’s a reference to moronic statements like your one above peddling stereotypes.

The right should talk, what with all the calls for litmus tests.

One man does not represent millions of people and their political thought. I know that’s difficult for some of you to understand though.

paul, you’re confused. Those are for drug tests.

  • paulmdoro

    writer said:
paul, you’re confused. Those are for drug tests.

Sure they are. Keep telling yourself that. You sure like to state “the left” a lot and act as if it’s easily defined, with every single person agreeing on every single issue. I imagine you don’t think that about “the right.” It’s no more true of “the left.” It’s a lazy way to argue.

  • lane

This story won’t end. NPR can only receive taxpayer federal funds based on the premise that NPR offers a full-spectrum of opinion. The firing of Juan was clearly based on his attendance on Fox News shows, the only cable news focused on the Republican/indepdent/libertarian focus.

The bottom line is NPR is likely to lose the ability to obtain taxpayer funds due to its narrow audience focus. That’s the on-going story. If the CEO loses her position, I think the issue dies down. Otherwise, NPR de-funding will continue to be a story. In as belt-tightening environment, PBS and NPR funding issues will probably occur.

  • writer

The right should talk, what with all the calls for litmus tests.

    You’re right, paul.

  • writer

paul never refers to ‘the right’ in a generalizing manner.

  • paulmdoro

    writer said:

I certainly try to avoid broad generalizations. Can you find examples of me saying “the right”?

  • paulmdoro

Other than the one that was a response to your broad generalization of course.

  • paulmdoro

And for the record writer, I think you’re an OK guy, and I’m not trying to pick a fight with you. I just really deplore the way so many here constantly generalize “the left.” I do not believe that every single person right of center possesses the exact same thoughts and beliefs about everything. The same is true of those left of center.

  • DonnaK

I am so sick of hearing from and about Juan Williams–I never cared for him before and even less now!! He has milked it for all it’s worth($$), not just shut up and be Fox News boy toy!! He is not standing on principle, he wants the publicity now to keep him relevent.

Soros is doing his own thing which appears to be a billionaire giving to progressive candidates and causes. Why would Obama become involved? Obama isn’t a Republican who is willing to be purchased by any corporation or rich individual to pass whatever corporate relief or welfare they want of don’t want. The more Republicans get from the wealthy and corporations with hidden identities, the more they will make certain the middle class collapses and they get to pick up the money. Since Eisenhower, every Republican President has been a douche bag.

The Juan Williams story is getting old real fast. I supported Williams in his fight against NPR, but there are more important stories on the plate.

The first order of business for the newly elected Republican majority will be getting PBS & NPR out of the public trough. They are both platforms for DNC baloney-slicing and Bill Moyers BS. The principle of having public TV when there are literally a thousand alternatives is anachronistic—harking back to the three big network days. PBS & NPR can get along with their donations from Soros and other ultra-left hedge-fund billionaires.

What’s pathetic is your belief in simplistic stereotypes of NPR listeners. If you don’t like it (which you obviously don’t even though I doubt you’ve ever tuned in), don’t listen, but really when you talk about something you clearly possess no knowledge of, you come across as an ignorant ass.
