Mike Huckabee On Fred Thompson Claiming He Lied: ‘I’ve Been Called Worse’

With the 2012 primary elections in full swing, this week brought with it some unfinished business from 2008, as Mike Huckabee opened up a can of worms by suggesting that Sen. John McCain encouraged Fred Thompson to stay in the Republican primary to dilute the Huckabee vote. Sen. McCain denied it, while Thompson essentially called Huckabee a liar, and on Fox & Friends this morning, Huckabee noted that he meant no offense, and was a bit confused as why he had to “apologize for thinking they were that smart.”

“I’ve been called a liar by Fred Thompson and John McCain, but I’ve been called worse by Clayton and Dave!” joked Huckabee to hosts Clayton Morris and Dave Briggs, to which the latter replied, “not on camera!”

Huckabee then explained the way things happened has he understood them yet again: that three McCain staffers went to Huckabee campaign manager Ed Rollins and told him that McCain and Thompson were working together. Huckabee called it “brilliant, shrewd, intelligent… I complimented them and congratulated them for a great tactic.” Now, he added confusingly, “I have to go back and apologize for thinking they were that smart!”

Other than the perceived need to hide the guy behind the curtain running winger Oz, I really don’t understand what the biggie is here. Seriously Rs: do you REALLY think your party DOESN’T manipulate the hell out of your reality in order to ensure the mighty righty uptighty whitey guy gets their nomination (because, after all’s said & done, it IS “their” nomination, isn’t it)?
