Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton: D.C. Should Tell Congress To ‘Go Straight To Hell’

video

On CNN’s American Morning and other media appearances, District of Columbia Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton lashed out at Congress over the budget battle on Capitol Hill, saying it’s time the District of Columbia “told the Congress to go straight to hell.”

DC’s budget–which has been presented to Congress for approval (and it’s balanced) has not been approved, meaning the District cannot, essentially, spend its own money. “They require our budget to come here,” Holmes Norton said on CNN, “which is an abomination since we’re talking about local funds.”

Furious at DC being held hostage by Congress, and facing layoffs and the loss of tourism in the event of a government shutdown, Holmes Norton said “we have a crowd here holding up the entire country,” and specifically for D.C., it’s a “double hit” since it won’t just be the shutdown, but also the closure of tourist draws like the Smithsonian that bring tourists to the city. “They’ve hit us where it really hurts, in our economy.”

Watch it here, from CNN:

In a previous interview with a local television station in D.C., Norton compared the D.C. budget being held up by Congress as the “equivalent of bombing civilians.”

You can’t really blame her. The dems could have passed whatever they wanted last year but punted. You can only blame them and the anointed one for this mess.

  • skyfet

I don’t want to go to hell, so I’d like not to wish it for anyone (even though I think some are whack jobs).

In theory…except the GOP filibustered almost everything.

  • Pablo

DC and everything in it can go straight to hell. We could use a fresh start.

  • NOBAMA 2012

Norton has a LOT OF NERVE…these Liberal Lewzers had the POTUS and the Majority in the HOUSE & SENATE and they STILL couldn’t pass a budget LAST YEAR…in fact, these LIBERAL LEWZERS HAVEN’T PASSED A BUDGET SINCE 2009!!!

And as far as the government employees in D.C., let them go out in the private sector and GET A REAL JOB!

The DC area is one of the few doing great these past 10 years because of the insane growth and spending of the federal government. But like a little child they complain when they might not have the government pay their bills for a few days.

Exactly. DC’s economy is humming, and their housing market hasn’t crashed. The District is completely cut-off from the real world.

    Nice lie- got more?

With a $14 trillion dollar debt, the Dims can’t cut 2% from a $3.7 trillion budget.

    What losers.

Exactly. Not to mention they controlled everything when the budget for 2010 was SUPPOSED to be passed last year.

The senate hasn’t passed anything in how long for the budget. They should thank the media for keeping it all so nice and quiet…

Trust me the GOP are not cutting $60, it’s just a gimmick. Unless they are serious about starving grandma and grandpa. Do you support that? would you like your Grandpa to starve? its a serious question.

You’re right. The d’s couldn’t muster up 60 votes even though they had the majority. Now, since you’re so smart, tell us how many d’s voted “nay” on the budget? I won’t wait.

Well of course, it’s all about Washington DC, isn’t it Ms.Norton? You actually think, it’s all about keeping the monstrosity called Washington running and nothing else. It costs the American tax-payers upward of $500-Million a day…A DAY…to keep this worthless PIG called Washington running. A government that produces nothing!

  • Steve_27

Planned parent hood, NPR, the deficit, absurd stimulus packages, not passing a budget, endless entitelments, those are things that could go to hell.

    “requires 60 votes?”

    WRONG

In fact, the 2009 budget passed along party lines without a single GOP vote.
55-43 in the Senate. And 233-193 in the House. 20 Dems in the House & 2 in the Senate voted against.

And as far as last year, the Democrats couldn’t even get a budget past the Blue Dogs.

So don’t come on here and try to blame the GOP.

    You owe “notsofast” an apology.

Right…and if a Republican places a secret hold or threatens a filibuster, it takes 60 votes to do anything.

The District of Columbia is a city with residents…but because they are not a state, they have to submit their budget to Congress for approval.

Most cities only require the Mayor and the City Council to approve.

She has a right to be upset. She wants the city to be able to run its affairs separately from the Federal Govt….but they have no choice because the GOP continuously blocks allowing DC to have its own voting representation.

Um, where did she play the race card? Nowhere in that statement did she play the race card or blame the budget problems on race.

Or do you just assume that she’s playing race card?

Ms. Norton was known as “Brillo Head” back when I lived in the DC area. She was an advocate for the professional victims then and I see nothing has changed.
