Bill Maher Blames Biden’s Low Approval On Americans Being Chronically ‘Bummed’: ‘Cheer the F**k Up!’
During Friday’s Real Time, host Bill Maher blamed President Joe Biden’s low approval ratings on Americans being too concerned with their mental health, claiming people need to “Cheer the fuck up!”
Maher encouraged his viewers to stop “acting like life in America in 2024 is unbearable” adding that Biden’s ratings are so low “not because he’s doing such a bad job,” but because Americans enjoy living “with their head in the toilet.”
The left-wing comedian cited rising wages, record unemployment, a soaring economy, and low costs for consumer goods as examples of Biden’s success before slamming Americans for focusing too much on their mental well-being. He brought up the blessings of online shopping, stuffed crust pizza, legal weed, and internet porn as reasons people should “cheer the fuck up!”
“Depression is of course a very real thing. It’s also true that earlier generations never suffered from the expectation that you’re supposed to feel good all the time. One in eight adults are on antidepressants, and that doesn’t include the ones who steal them from their kids,” he said.
“Without a doubt, antidepressants can be life-saving for those in need them but here’s the thing: About three-quarters of Americans who are on them haven’t been diagnosed with depression at all. They just want a magic pill,” Maher added.
Maher then complained that syndromes of depression all have to be clinically labeled instead of just being “sad.”
He continued, “No one’s just sad anymore. They’re clinically depressed. They don’t really worry. They have chronic anxiety. Do you like things neat and organized? That’s OCD. You’re bummed when it’s cold. Out seasonal depression. I hate being alone. Separation anxiety. Bored? That’s ADHD. Shy? Social Anxiety Disorder. Why? Because you don’t want to go to the office party.”
Near the end of the segment, Maher recalled how a group of users on X, formerly known as Twitter, gave sad responses when the account for Sesame Street Muppet Elmo asked how everyone was doing.
“I’m gonna be real, I’m at my fucking limit. In the grand scheme of the universe, our existence is merely a blink devoid of inherent meaning or purpose,” Maher concluded “And Elmo wrote back, ‘you think you haven’t bad? Try living your life for the guys forearm shoved up your ass.’”
