The Cronut Turns One Tomorrow
A year ago — goodness, has it been a year? — the Cronut was quietly birthed into the world, midwifed by Dominique Ansel. Suddenly, the humble pastry blew up overnight, capturing the public’s imagination and sparking a terrifying Frankenfood trend that has yet to die.
We’ve had a very mixed relationship with the hybrid pastry and all that it represents, but we can’t ignore that it created the first — the first — modern-day pastry celebrity chef. For a pastry, too. And we can’t think of a better way to celebrate the Cronutversary than with Ansel’s recent James Beard Award.
So, uh, happy birthday, Cronut. May you eventually stop flooding our inboxes with knockoffs.
