Chief Justice Roberts Issues Rare Statement Rejecting Trump’s Call to Impeach Judge Who Halted Deportations

Supreme Court Justice John Roberts issued a rare statement rejecting President Donald Trump’s call to impeach Federal Judge James Boasberg, who temporarily ordered the Trump administration to cease deporting migrants under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.

“This judge, like many of the Crooked Judges’ I am forced to appear before, should be IMPEACHED!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “WE DON’T WANT VICIOUS, VIOLENT, AND DEMENTED CRIMINALS, MANY OF THEM DERANGED MURDERERS, IN OUR COUNTRY. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!

Here is the chief justice’s statement (via Politico’s Kyle Cheney):

“For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision. The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose.”

Already, a member of congress — Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) — has introduced Articles of Impeachment against Judge Boasberg, alleging that the judge has “abused the powers of his judicial authority.”

Roberts, who was appointed to the Supreme Court by President George W. Bush, has ruled in favor of some key cases for Trump in recent months, including Trump’s presidential immunity case.
