Darline Graham Goes All In On Nuking the Filibuster: ‘Where I Differ From My Brother’

Sen. Darline Graham (R-SC) — the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) — made clear on Monday night that she’s all for getting rid of the filibuster to pass the SAVE Act, explaining her viewpoint as “where I differ from my brother.”

After the late senator’s July 11 passing, Graham was sworn in as his replacement on July 14. After President Donald Trump urged her to run for re-election, she entered the special Republican primary triggered by the death of her brother, who won South Carolina’s GOP primary in June.

During Monday’s debate, Graham told the crowd, “One of the first things I did was co-sponsor the SAVE America Act. As I said earlier, I’m willing to stay through recess to get it done. What’s up with recess anyway? Who gets a month off from work? I think we should stay up there, and work, and get it done.”

As Puck’s Chief Washington Correspondent Leigh Ann Caldwell explained in June on MS NOW, “Trump’s insistence on the SAVE America Act has completely paralyzed Congress… They had to leave town early because nothing could get through because of the SAVE America Act.”

One of the key provisions of the bill requires voters participating in federal elections to have a valid ID, of which Graham emphasized, “You have to have an ID to check out a library book, to buy alcohol, and you don’t have to have an ID to vote? That’s absurd.”

She added, “I am all for, and this is where I differ from my brother, getting rid of the filibuster to get this done, because eventually the Democrats are going to get rid of it anyway.”

Earlier this year, despite pressure from Trump, the late senator said, “Filibuster changes, I think, change the Senate. It may happen one day, but I don’t think it’s a good idea.”
