Delta Plane at Orlando Airport Catches Fire, Sending Passengers Hastily Evacuating Down Slides as Fire Trucks Rush Across Tarmac

Stunning video showed a Delta plane catching fire on the tarmac at Orlando International Airport on Monday.

According to a report by CNN aviation and transportation correspondent Pete Muntean, the flight was a “completely full Airbus A330 plane” that had just departed the gate at the Orlando airport to head to Atlanta, when a fire broke out in the tailpipe of one of the aircraft’s two engines.

There were 282 passengers on board Delta Flight 1213 at the time, and fortunately none of them were reported to be injured in the evacuation. A Reuters report added that there were also 12 crew members aboard.

The airport’s social media account tweeted a confirmation of the fire and safe evacuation of the passengers.

An eyewitness at the airport, Dylan Wallace, captured several video clips of the fire and aftermath, showing fire emerging from the right side engine and passengers evacuating out of the exit doors and down the emergency slides. Shortly thereafter, fire trucks and other emergency responders arrive on the scene to put out the fire.

The FAA is investigating the incident and Delta maintenance teams are conducting an examination of the plane, Muntean reported.

“Delta flight crews followed procedures to evacuate the passenger cabin when flames in the tailpipe of one of the aircraft’s two engines were observed,” the airline said in a statement released to media. “We appreciate our customers’ cooperation and apologize for the experience. Nothing is more important than safety and Delta teams will work to get our customers to their final destinations as soon as possible.”

Delta also announced that the airline would be using other planes to fly the passengers to their intended destinations.
