Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) accused President Donald Trump of pulling Department of Justice resources from the fights against child exploitation and counterterrorism, arguing Friday on The Daily Mic Drop that the reallocation of funds “makes us less safe.”
Talking to host Joe Gallina, who founded the progressive platform Call to Activism, Warner said, “Donald Trump is supposed to be the guy that’s concerned about crime… In every FBI field office — and we just got this — 25-45% of the agents that used to work on counterrorism, cyber-crime, counter-espionage, they’ve all been taken off those duties and assigned to immigration.”
“They come to our committee and say, ‘We’re not doing anything. We’re not effectively working.’ How can this president say he wants to keep America safe,” Warner continued, “if he’s taking folks off of counterterrorism to try and help ICE agents?”
“Correct me if I’m wrong,” interjected Gallina, “but I even heard child exploitation.”
“Yes,” responded Warner. “And that was their issue! … You remember some of the crazies from before, about Pizzagate. If they’ve been advocating this, why are they taking FBI agents — especially now that ICE has got a bigger budget than the whole FBI? This is such a malallocation of resources, and frankly, makes us less safe.”
In September, MSNBC reported on data from the libertarian Cato Institute, which showed that 20% of FBI agents have been diverted to work on immigration enforcement. The network also spoke with a former FBI official who said, “If the bureau is not looking at domestic terrorism, nobody else is. We are now more susceptible to extremists because of these actions.”
