‘Democrats Are Cowardly!’ Bill Maher Scorches the Left — Says They’ve Embraced a ‘Level of Nutty’ That Makes Him Open to Voting for JD Vance in 2028

“Democrats are cowardly,” Bill Maher told ABC’s Jonathan Karl. “They’re cowardly.”

The HBO Real Time host went off, in an interview which aired Sunday on ABC’s This Week, about the current state of the Democratic party — arguing that its Democratic Socialist wing is exerting power while the more moderate voices are ceding it.

“Their party is being taken over now,” Maher said. “Every day I hear about a new very radical guy. I feel very good about like 10 whenever years ago, I did lose fans — because I wasn’t gonna go along with some of this crazy stuff on the Left too. I didn’t change really on what I thought about the Right. But I can’t sit and just not notice stuff, which people seem to want to do because it’s all about my team or your team. But yeah, there’s some crazy stuff. You know, when we’re cheering for the Intifada… cut! I’m out.”

Karl referenced a recent interview Maher conducted with Vice President JD Vance — in which the HBO host expressed openness to voting for Vance in the 2028 election, should he run.

“Your vote is up for grabs,” Karl said.

“Yes,” Maher said. “My vote is in play. Because it can’t be Trump running. So I’m not living in communist America. I mean, I know that the talking point is that it’s not communism, it’s socialism. OK, I’ve read the quotes from the DSA platform from their own mouths. Don’t tell me I’m not seeing what I am seeing! And DSA, again, they they say things like ‘takeover of key industries,’ … That’s communism! You know, there is a definition.”

“By the way, Trump’s doing that too,” Karl said.

“Of course, yes,” Maher replied.

Maher indicated that he believes Democrats are poised for a strong midterm in November, as he thinks the 2026 election will be a referendum on President Donald Trump. But Maher thinks, with Trump off the ballot in 2028, it will be a different story.

“his wing of the party… This new wing with all the energy…it’s not just a few people anymore,” Maher said. “Every day I read about a new person in Colorado and Wisconsin, somebody who is saying some variation of, not ‘defund the police,’ ‘abolish the police.’ No prisons, no police. Like, what world do they think we could possibly live in under these conditions? It’s just a level of nutty that — I’m so glad that whenever it was, I was like, ‘No, I’m not going along.'”

“Could you see yourself voting for JD Vance?” Karl said.

“Yes,” Maher said. “If this is the Democratic side, yes.”
