Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner went shirtless for a Tuesday interview during which he showed off how he’s covered up a tattoo he realized “resembled a Nazi symbol.”

The image of Platner’s tattoo, which closely resembles a Nazi SS Totenkopf, went viral on social media, and the Democrat eventually announced his intention to cover up the image.

“It was not until I started hearing from reporters and DC insiders that I realized this tattoo resembled a Nazi symbol,” he told Politico. “I absolutely would not have gone through life having this on my chest if I knew that — and to insinuate that I did is disgusting. I am already planning to get this removed.”

Platner later sat with local outlet WGME, which showed off the cover-up on social media.

“We just sat down with Graham Platner to talk about his previous online comments, and the now-infamous tattoo. He gave us a first look at the cover-up tattoo he had done just last night, and spoke candidly about the controversies surrounding him now,” the outlet wrote, teasing the full interview, which will air at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Platner also recently disavowed old Reddit posts where he called police officers “b*stards” and rural, White Americans “racist.”

“I don’t think any of that is indicative of who I am today, really,” he told CNN. “I’m not a communist. I’m not a socialist. I own a small business. I’m a Marine Corps veteran.”

Platner is running to unseat Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME).

Platner claimed in an interview with Pod Save America that he was “very inebriated” when he got his Nazi-linked tattoo.

“We got very inebriated, and we did what Marines on liberty do, and we decided to go get a tattoo,” he said, adding, “We chose a terrifying-looking skull and crossbones off the wall because we were Marines and, you know, skulls and crossbones are a pretty standard military thing.”
